Boss Katana-100/212 MkII 2x12" (KTN-212-2)

At publication time, the Katana-100/212 MkII was featured on our recommended lists for Guitar Amps Under $500 and Solid State Guitar Amps.

The Boss Katana-100/212 MKII takes the Katana Series' focused amp modeling and effects concept and make them available for big stage and big venue use.

At 100 Watts and with two 12" speakers, this combo amp can go really loud, while maintaining the features that make the Katana series highly rated: having fewer but high quality amp models, and the inclusion of Boss effects right on the amp.

In addition to the built-in controls on the amp itself, the Katana allows for deep editing via software editor, and all these digital sound processing features are based on the same technology that Boss utilizes on their popular guitar processors.

Finally, this stage amp can easily be transformed into a practice amp with its power attenuator, which lets you turn down the power from 100W to 50W, and down to 0.5W.

Specifications:

  • Power: 100W / 50W / 0.5W
  • Speaker: 2 x 12"
  • Amp Modeling: 5 x Amp Models
  • Effects: 60 Effects
  • Input: 1 x 1/4" (Instrument), 1 x 1/4" (Power Amp), 1 x 1/8" (Aux)
  • Outputs: 1 x 1/4" (Line), 1 x 1/4" (Rec / Headphones)
  • Weight: 43.6 lbs.

Pros:
Versatility both in terms of tone and volume is the key factor that makes the Katana-100/212 MkII a market favorite. While it does not have hundreds of amp models, the ones that it carries are much appreciated by users, with most commendations pointing to its clean and brown voicings. It also goes without saying that guitarists love the built-in effects, so much so that some describe this amp as an all-in-one rig. The ability to lower the power rating to 0.5W is another practical feature that extends the functionality of this amp from stage use to quiet practice.

Cons:
Even with its power attenuator allowing for 50W rating, the amp's two 12" speakers maybe a bit too overkill for some uses.

Overall:
With Boss reputation for quality and reliability, the Katana-100/212 MkII is a great choice for those who are looking for a workhorse all-in-one amp.
