A Very Fine Monitor for the Price!!!

First off, I switched to these monitors initially out of necessity. Due to a remodel, I needed something a bit smaller and more aesthetically pleasing than my beloved KRK VXT 8's (with their visually loud yellow woofers that my wife abhorred). I had heard the BM5 years ago when they were more than I could afford. They were remarkable then, but even more so now! I really loved my KRK's for their accuracy, clarity, and powerful low-end - and the thought of sacrificing those qualities pained me. I moved to the KRK VXT 8's specifically to get more representation in the lower register so that my mixes would not have any hidden and unwanted lower frequencies of which I was unaware (embarrassing!). Enter the new kid in town - the amazing Dynaudio BM5 MKIII. Wow! But, before I explain the "Wow!", let me very importantly mention the break-in period.

I did not at first give enough credit to the break-in period that the BM5's needed and is specifically mentioned in the manual. In fact, I came very close to sending them back. BUT!! After several hours of play time they really started to shine. The frequency response began to expand - especially in the low-end - and the clarity, separation, and imaging just got better and better. Now they are the BM5 that I remember from my first demo back in the mid 2000's - BIGGER THAN LIFE. The sound stage that these monitors create is bigger than they look as if they should be able to accomplish! It's no wonder Dynaudio has received so much attention for their monitors with their very innovative designs and materials (a voice coil that rides on the outside of the magnet and is made from lightweight aluminum?, class D amplification, and a one piece low-mass woofer cone made of a patented highly rigid Magnesium Silicate Polymer). I could go on and on about their design but will let you read and hear for yourself.

When matched against my previous monitor the BM5's displayed far more accurate low-end and much better separation and imaging. A 7" woofer that can reproduce 42Hz and a magnetic fluid tweeter that can reach 24kHz make a huge difference. At the top I'm hearing sheen on cymbals and intimate breath sounds from singers I've never heard before. All of it combined, the sound stage just got richer, deeper, and more complex. And given their efficiency, there is no power loss at all. These things are loud! My only concerns were these: 1. Because my space is limited and close to the wall, I was very hesitant to return to a rear-vented enclosure (the KRK's are vented on the front to avoid this issue). But, the BM5 comes with a +/- 2db tenuate/boost switch which easily compensates for either close-to-wall or far-away positions. No problem! 2. I am accustomed to pro-level monitors having sound isolation pads on the bottom of the enclosure. Not that they solve all problems, but they help. The BM5 enclosure has none. But, since I ended up using the IsoAcoustics stands with them, I'm actually glad they do not. They sit more securely on the iso stand pads without a pad of their own on the bottom. 3. The sleep feature comes in very handy for me, but they did not at first wake up very quickly when I sent a signal to them. Just like the drivers, that changed during the break-in period, and they now wake in a very reasonable short time frame of 5-10 seconds.

If you've never heard nor seen Dyanaudio's BM5 MKIII and you need a better pro-level monitory for a price that us non-pro's can justify, I highly recommend that you hear them/buy them soon! They are a total game changer. I have even more confidence now that I will accurately hear everything in my mixes and everything that others worked so hard to create in theirs. These things make it like BEING THERE. They truly do!

Professional Mix Monitor

Professional level resolution.
Tight bass, clean mid and detailed high end.
Non-fatigue and Natural, open, transparent sound profile.
Wide enough sweet-spot.
NO driver noise. A little bit tweeter noise which i can't hear at all.
For mix purposes, you can trust this monitor.
And just listening music is also joy.
Highly recommend.

Dynaudio BM5 Speakers are Great Sounding.

I purchased the speakers a while ago. Great natural piano, voice, violin, etc. Only wish they had optional cover. They get dusty. Clean with lint cloth which helps. Plenty of power and sound best when you turn out the lights. These are self powered monitor type speakers.

Just buy them!

These things are really great! Definitely a huge upgrade from my first gen. JBL 305s. It's like a blanket was removed from my mixes. They don't have the wide field the JBLs have, but when you're in the sweet spot they really sing. They do sound pretty bad when you fire them up. They just sound off - and I was worried I'd made the wrong purchase. I ran music through them for about 30 hours and they honestly sound like different speakers. Pulling up old mixes I can hear things that just weren't evident before. I can't praise these enough, honestly the best upgrade I've made for my home studio.

Finally the truth is revealed!

After spending years working with my HS5 I decided to upgrade. Mostly because I noticed that my mixes were not translating well on other audio systems and after a months of research I decided to pull the trigger on a pair of these Dynaudio's and let me tell you, I was blown away instantly! Now my mixes sound better and translate better than I could imagine. Now my HS5 are sitting in a corner collecting dust.
