A Great All-in-one Drum Mic Kit from Audix

The DP7 represents the latest collection of drum kit microphones from Audix, a manufacturer that has built its stellar reputation around crafting application-specific microphones. Included in the DP7 drum mic package is the D6, Audix's flagship kick drum mic, D2 and D4 mics for the toms, an i5, which proves useful on snare drums (as well as guitar cabinets), and a pair of ADX51s for overhead miking. A road case keeps everything safe when traveling. Everything you need for great drum sounds live or in the studio is included in the DP7!

Audix DP7 at a Glance:

D6 for kick drum
The D6 has a frequency response of 30Hz-15kHz and is characterized with a cardioid pick-up pattern. The D6 is designed to sound good in any position and it is not dependent on finding the "sweet spot" of the drum. The D6 capsule features the same legendary VLM technology that has made the D series percussion and instrument microphones very popular for today's live stages and recording studios.

i5 for snare
The i5's cardioid polar pattern allows it to focus on the specific instrument that is being miked while rejecting other instruments or ambient noise on stage. With a smooth and uniform frequency response of 50 Hz-16 kHz and an ability to handle sound pressure levels in excess of 140 dB, the i5 can be used for a wide variety of applications and for all genres of music.

Pair of D2s for toms
For bringing out the real, dynamic sound of your drum toms and congas, nothing beats (ha, ha) the D-2! The D-2 accurately reproduces the warmth and punch you listen for from percussion, leaving out the muddy, indistinct "boom" that can mar recordings. The D-2's natural warmth also makes it a great mic for saxophones and other woodwinds requiring a true, sensitive, yet big reproduction.

D4 for floor tom
Make sure your sound's low-end has that propulsive kick! The D4 really puts that extra "oomph" in your kick drum, bass amp, and other low instruments thanks to its flat, linear response. Since this kit comes with the D6, Audix's premier kick drum mic, a good application for the D4 with this kit would be the floor tom.

Overheads
The ADX51 is a pre-polarized condenser microphone designed to handle a wide variety of live, studio and broadcast applications. Characterized with a cardioid pickup pattern and a smooth uniform response over a frequency range of 40Hz-20kHz, the ADX51 is precision machined from solid brass with a low reflective black e-coat finish.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

I cannot say enough great things about these mics. They are very well made for starters and come with the perfect carrying case for travel. The kick mic is insane! I love the built in EQ and settings as it leaves very little tweaking on the mix. I use them to record drum videos and now I'm recording tracks for different artists. I am constantly getting compliments on how great my drums sound. I don't change my heads often and am a novice at engineering so I give most of the credit to these mics that make my life easy. Audix is the bomb! I'm so glad I made this purchase!!!

Audix D7 Drum Mic Kit

I waited 3 years to write this review and truthfully I could not be happier with the Audix D7 drum mic kit, so easy to set up, tear down, run mic cords underneath rack, label, and store. Audix thought of everything, easy mounting clips, snap-on, and the screw-down clamp type, I prefer the clamp-on, except the snare, I use a gooseneck on a mic stand. I have been complemented by several sound engineers on how easy it is to balance the kit (7 Piece Pearl).
No dought hear! it was a great choice, and as always you can't go wrong with Sweetwater and my friend Roq Martin to bounce ideas and thoughts on any future gear needed.

audix Upgrade!

Upgraded to Audix DP7 drum mic's from fp7's and the sound check was great with all mic's, just amazing. You should know for my kit and set up I'll need to purchase right angle XLR cords for back of mic, the straight plug is just to long. Drumming is good for the soul, Thanks Audix!

Buy once, cry once

...as a friend of mine likes to say. Don't waste your money on cheap mic packages. The difference between this and the ubiquitous CAD set is night and day. The pad, high pass filter, and screen on the overhead condensers are an indicator of the attention to detail and quality you're getting with this set (and clean up the sound right away). Solid quality microphones that sound excellent right out of the box even before you EQ anything.

There's two ways to record drums -- use what you have and fix it in production, or start with good quality mics that do most of the work for you. These are in the latter category. Sure, a pro studio is going to go more upmarket, but for your own practice studio, putting together pre-production tracks and demos, and even these days actual releases, these will do the job very well.

I expected good. I did not expect this good.

Very Nice

Very easy to set up. I purchased this in the bundle package that came with stands, cables and clips.

I set the mics up, created 8 tracks in my DAW (snuck my extra sm57 near my kick pad to catch more of what I hear from the kick, sounds great!), set levels, set the tempo, turned up click volume, armed all the tracks, put on headphones only mode so you don't catch the click in the drum mics, press record(finally lol), aaaaaannndd I couldn't be happier. This is a much easier work flow for me than programming drums like I did previously.

I've played drums for close to 20 years now. So going through the slow steps of programming was kinda a buzz killer when I knew deep down inside, "if only i had drum mics, my limited amount of time to enjoy my hobbies could be more productive". This product does just that. Makes me more productive without the robotic nature of programming.

These are going straight into a Roland Octocapture (amazing unit) into cubase 8. For being such a simple setup and the fact I'm lacking Awesome dedicated mic preamps, I'm impressed with how powerful I can still make these sound. It seams like mixing real/live drums is even easier then using the samples for me, I know some would completely disagree.

Know that it does take a little playing around with mic placement, as does anything you try to record.

Bottom Line, I would recommend this to all my drummer friends, It's well worth the investment and adds a whole new level to practicing and experimenting with drums.
