5-piece Electronic Kit with Powerful App Enhancements

There's even more to love about the DTX400 Series in the Yamaha DTX402K electronic drum kit. From its immersive stereo drum samples and better-playing rubber pads to its ironclad 4-post stand, this kit boasts practice and performance improvements across the board. Exciting new features include 10 training and challenge modes via the free DTX402 Touch app (iOS/Android) and Yamaha's Rec'n'Share app compatibility to film and share drum covers straight from your iOS device. The DTX402's 10 customizable drum kits and 415 percussion sounds offer a wealth of tones to suit your musical moods: pop, metal, EDM, and beyond.

Powerful features and hardware

Quick access to 10 preset kits

There's no menu diving within the DTX402 module. Each of its 10 preset kits is accessible via a dedicated button. This is true of play-along songs, training modes, metronome, and tempo/volume control as well. For greater editing control, users can download the free DTX402 Touch app.

Better-feeling drum and cymbal pads

The DTX402K sports even better-playing, more responsive rubber pads than previous generations. Drums are fast and dynamic, and cymbals can be choked for even greater realism.

Stable 4-post rack stand

A welcome feature in the DTX402K is its stable new rack system. Hi-hat and cymbal pads sit on offset, adjustable cymbal arms for greater positional freedom.

Rec'n'Share app compatibility

Yamaha's Rec'n'Share app (iOS) injects your mobile video with audio straight from your DTX402 module for performances that are easy to share with friends, bandmates, and video services like YouTube. It all happens on the fly: pick songs from your iOS music library, find the sounds you're after, and point and shoot.

Even better with the free DTX402 Touch app (iOS/Android)

Customize drum kits

Plug your device in and the free DTX402 Touch app makes it fast and easy to access the DTX402's deepest kit-building features. Here you can choose sounds, tune and balance drums and cymbals, pan left to right, add reverb, and mute pads altogether.

Gamify your practice routine

By feeding you standard music notation and tracking how well you stay in the pocket, the DTX402 Touch app's Song Score Gate and Rhythm Gate features will make you a tighter, more in-demand drummer. No matter where you are in your musical journey, these features will keep your practice and warm-up hours fresh, with progress you can see.

Build speed with Fast Blast

Fancy yourself the next Johnny Rabb? Fast Blast mode tracks how many drum strokes you can play in a fixed amount of time. This is a great way to build speed and a fun way to compete with your drummer friends. For an intermediate kit that's packed with practice and performance features, drummers at Sweetwater stand behind the Yamaha DTX402K.

Sweetwater made initial set up a breeze!!

I was worried that as a newbie I would have trouble setting this up and that it would take hours of looking through the instruction manual. I was pleasantly surprised when they included a large set up poster than was already taped to a large portion of the box!! Sweetwater is awesome!!

Very unstable.

I purchased this for my teen son who primarily plays guitar/ piano. He and one friend have a band and he records drum tracks using this set. As far as functionality, this set has been excellent. My son plays this thing pretty hard, the frame and drum pads I am not able to tighten enough to keep from moving all over. (I have the drum pads and frame connections tightened as tight as they will go). It always looks like it's about to tip over and sometimes does.

Mixed, but honest review

I'm going to try and keep the emotion out of this review, but that will be little difficult. First off, I'll start with the positives: The sounds that come with the unit are versatile and I like them a lot. There are plenty of YouTube videos that demonstrate them. I also love the feel of the rubber pads. I did upgrade the bass drum pedal to a kick pedal because it's just so much better striking the bass drum, but you can get by with the pedal that comes with it.

Here's where it starts to (literally) fall apart. I bought this kit in May of 2021, I'm writing the review in October 2022 (18 months). This thing is simply not built for the long haul. Let me qualify that. I bought this kit with the intention of learning from scratch. I had no prior drumming experience. So, I put a ton of hours on this kit, practicing at least 2 hours a day 5-7 days a week for the first 6-ish months. Then, I started to use for recording and live usage with musicians. Things were going great, then about 10 months in, the ride cymbal sensor no longer was working, so I replaced it. Annoying, but not the end of the world. Last night, I had to replace the crash cymbal. That's (2) cymbals at $100 each. That is super frustrating. On top of that, the cymbals themselves are glitchy when they are working. The ride cymbal chimes every time I do a fill (SO FRUSTRATING for recording). So, I need to unplug the ride, record. Then plug it back in when it's time to play it. Not ideal. The hi-hat is also glitchy, working correctly 80% of the time. Again, I know this is because I put a ton of hours in a short amount of time.

If you are an experienced drummer and planning to use it low to medium amount of time -- or using for occasional recording, it's fantastic and I would recommend it. If you are planning heavy usage, I would look at better quality electronic drums.

Very low-quality.

It does not sound particularly realistic, the pads feel nothing like an actual drum kit, the cymbals don't feel good and do not last. The module is limiting, and the pedals barely work. The older generations at least came with an actual kick pedal, but not anymore. The only thing this kit might be useful for is beginners, but even that would only be reasonable in some circumstances. For $ more, you could get yourself a PDP acoustic starter kit, which sounds quite good, is quite customizable, is a real acoustic drum kit, and comes with cymbals and everything.

Terrible drum set. Do not buy!

I am a drummer with 61 years of professional experience. I am also a retired band director. Yamaha makes good quality Marching and Concert percussion! They also make excellent woodwind, brass and stringed instruments as well as PA systems. I have a Yamaha Classical Electric/Acoustic guitar and a Yamaha PA system. No complaints with either.

Their electronic drum set, however, is a piece of crap.

The first thing I noticed was that the drum key is not a standard size and, of course, everything is put together with their drum key. I used my normal drum key and it just spun around on the lugs.

Second, the cymbal mounts are in bad places. I had to buy 3 cymbal stands to accommodate my set-up.

Third, the bass drum pad is made so you cannot anchor it to the floor. I had a carpet down and it just kept creeping forward when I played. I had to tie it to the set's posts to keep it in place.

The Fourth and Most Important thing is the controller will quit in the middle of playing. I would try the ON/OFF switch, all the buttons for the pads, you name it l- nothing would cut the controller off or regain it's use. I had to UNPLUG the unit, count 20 seconds and plug back in to regain it's function.

I contacted Yamaha by email. They wanted a video of the controller quitting (they said it had NEVER happened before- yeah, right). After considerable effort (mounting a tripod to record over my shoulder and repeated attempts, the processor finally quit). I sent them the video. A week later I get a call from Isaac. He says the guy answering my email was "Tier One" and that he was a "Tier Two" person. He told me Yamaha would send me a processor with a return label to return the faulty processor. Without notice, I was delivered another full set of Yamaha electronic drums (huge box). I emailed and called and told them this would not work. I was told "that is the way Yamaha does it". I told them it was not the way I was going to do it. I returned the full box without opening it. I called again. I got the first guy I ever emailed about the problem!! He said he would talk to a supervisor to see what could be done. That was several months ago and I have not heard from them since. I just practice with just the pads now. I don't bother turning the processor on.
