Powered by Yamaha's Next-level DTX-PRO Drum Module

With its DTX-PRO drum module and expressive 3-zone ride and snare pads, the Yamaha DTX6K-X packs major value for the drummer who wants a set-up-and-start-rockin' set of electronic drums. Choose from 40 preset studio-sampled drum kits, or create up to 200 custom kits using the DTX6K-X's 400 onboard assignable sounds. More tone modification is possible in seconds flat using the DTX-PRO's Kit Modifier section — dial in room ambience, compression, and special effects with the twist of a few knobs. In concert with its durable Yamaha hardware and TCS/rubber pads, the DTX6K-X has all the ingredients you're looking for in a mid-level Yamaha kit: high-quality sound, ease of use, and responsive performance. You'll even find training tools and a record function right inside to better you as a performer. No band in sight? Pull up the DTX-PRO's 37 onboard play-along tracks and jam the night away.

DTX-PRO Module

40 studio-captured preset kits

Yamaha's DTX-PRO drum module sets you up with 40 complete drum kits, captured with all the punch, definition, and realism of a world-class studio environment.

200 custom user kits

Advanced users can use the DTX-PRO's 400 assignable voices to create custom kits for stage and studio. Want to blend electronic kick and snare with world percussion and acoustic cymbals? The DTX-PRO is your ticket to one-of-a-kind hybrid kits.

One-knob Kit Modifiers

The DTX-PRO's Kit Modifier section packs some extraordinary utility into just three knobs. You don't have to be a tone expert or electronics wizard to dial in custom sounds on this module. Just spin, set, and save.

  • Ambience: This dial adjusts how "wet," or roomy, drums and cymbals sound in your virtual environment.
  • Compression: Drums really come alive with a shot of compression. This single Comp knob eliminates the need to worry about ratios, thresholds, and knees — just twist until it sounds good.
  • Effect: This control delivers a diverse range of expression with the twist of a knob.

Loaded with training tools

Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, the DTX6K-X's DTX-PRO module packs the tools to make you a better drummer. You get a sophisticated programmable metronome to rein in tricky fills, 37 training songs to workshop grooves and pocket, and 10 onboard training functions for sharpening your chops. There's even a record function, so you can capture ideas and monitor your progress as you move along.

DTX6K-X Pads and Stand

Expressive 3-zone TCS snare pad

The snare is the centerpiece of any drum kit, electronic or otherwise. At Sweetwater, we are happy to report that the Yamaha DTX6K-X cuts no corners in this department. Its included XP80 pad gives you three separate zones for head strikes, rimshots, and cross-sticks. The Textured Cellular Silicone (TCS) playing surface is designed to feel like a real coated drumhead — only it's soft and easy on the joints, which is important when you're playing night after night. The XP80 snare is paired with a trio of single-zone rubber tom pads and Yamaha's KP65 kick tower for impressive expression across the kit.

Chokeable 3-zone ride

Equally impressive is the DTX6K-X's included 3-zone PCY135 ride cymbal. This ride gives you distinct edge/bow/bell zones to deliver a lifelike ride cymbal response. For instance, you can choke the PCY135 after a crash by grabbing it anywhere on the edge of the pad. You can even mute the cymbal before striking it to create unique sonic textures. This creates an extra level of realism you don't get with many electronic drum kits. The PCY135 comes paired with the HH65-controlled PCY95 hi-hat and an additional Yamaha PCY95 crash cymbal.

Kick pedal not included

Yamaha RS502 rack system

A solid kit requires a solid foundation. And that's why the Yamaha DTX6K-X includes the RS502 rack stand for effortless setups and unflappable security. The RS502's 1mm steel piping gives you a solid footing against tipping and rocking without excess carry weight. It comes outfitted with Yamaha's legendary mounts, booms, and clamps for peace of mind in the heat of a performance. And what about for the off-season? The RS502 folds up neatly for storage.

Excellent for Beginners. Great for Intermediate

Title is just my opinion. Module is excellent. Drum pads and symbols are solid. Although Tom's aren't mesh, they feel nice. Sound produced is excellent. Highly responsive drum set which is pleasing. Not a fan of both high hat and pedal for high hat. I'm interested in trying the K2 model and paying the extra for standalone high hat, which in turn is a 4 cymbal setup instead of 3.

Great Entry

If you're interested in the DTX lineup, this is a good entry, since you get a good drum module, a nice snare, a good ride, a decent crash and kick, and good single zone rubber pads. You might upgrade parts of the kit, but the module is advanced, and few components need modification.

The module is good both for beginners and for e-drum experts. It has training tools from the DTX402 series, including the songs; you can get the scores and learning material from Yamaha's website and use it with this kit. The module appears to have the advanced kit creation features that the DTXM12 multi-pad advertises, importantly the ability to layer up to four sounds per pad and trigger them in a variety of modes. While the module doesn't have the on-board pads of the M12, and it doesn't have bidirectional MIDI porting, the M12 handles multiple zones on one triggers, while this module can have many multi-zone pads.

The TCS snare is great to play. Getting TCS toms is a possible upgrade path, but rubber tom pads aren't terrible (note: I use anti-vibration sticks); it would be a luxury upgrade more than one that fixed a flaw.

The main downside to this kit is the hi-hat. The cymbal pad is a single zone, and the pedal is uncomfortable. The pedal doesn't stay put on the floor (even with carpet spikes), it doesn't trigger reliably, and it doesn't give any feedback to your foot. I can feel my bass drum pedal's position, and the lack of any similar tension in the hi-hat pedal is off-putting. I plan on acquiring a movable hi-hat to get a better-feeling response.

The other major change you could make to improve this kit would be migrating it to separate drum stands for ergonomic adjustment. The rack is nice, but it can't be adjusted beyond certain limits without losing stability, and using stands for everything would make it easier to use a better hi-hat setup.

Despite a few issues, this kit remains an excellent entry to the DTX system. Even if you need to change a few components, this kit lets you get usable drum equipment for tasks you've got to do now, and it facilitates expansion for when you have more time and resources.

I expected more

I have alot of experience with alesis, roland, & yamaha kits so I am well versed on being able to adjust pad sensitivity and crosstalk in within module settings.

I had this kit for 3 weeks and i could not manipulate any combination of settings to where it stopped having cross talk between the toms and the cymbals.

It's standard practice for me to customize the ride on my electric kits to ensure there is a distinct bell, bow, and edge and it was just impossible to do this effectively without the precense of some strange dull "pong/pang" type sound that surfaced out of the ride bow that should have had a nice clear stick defined sound. This was a huge disappointment and really made it tough to play without worry of triggering that terrible noise.

maybe....might have been able live with the cross talk and the awful sounds that came from the ride in rehearsal but by the time I had accepted I couldn't adjust any setting to my liking the snare pad/trigger went out, just completely stopped working. I was able to return the kit....thankfully because for such a simple kit this is way too pricey especially for what I experienced. I would hands down recommend any price tier of roland or alesis over this kit.

Disclaimer: I didn't buy this from sweetwater, I just want fellow e-drummers to be aware of the issues I had in case they made the mistake of thinking this module and or kit would be better than any comparably or even lower priced roland.

I went back to my trusty roland td-11 and even though the module is much older the sounds, adjustability, and ability to resist crosstalk is 10 to 1 better than the dtx.
