High-performance, Value-packed Digital Piano from Kawai

Are you looking for an affordable, high-performance digital piano for home or stage use? Sweetwater has an excellent suggestion: the Kawai ES120. Weighing only 26.5 pounds, the ES120 makes an ideal stage piano with 25 amazing sounds onboard. The playing feel is superb. The ES120 features Kawai’s highly respected Responsive Hammer Compact (RHC) action, which gives you the feel of a real acoustic grand, complete with graded hammers. And the sound is sublime: Harmonic Imaging technology and 192-note polyphony deliver impeccable grand piano sound. Your ears will revel in gloriously detailed, state-of-the-art samples of Kawai’s flagship Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano, along with a selection of authentic electric piano, bass, string, and upright piano sounds. If performance and value are your two top concerns, then the Kawai ES120 should be on your short list.

Harmonic Imaging technology delivers stunning grand piano sound

Sit down at the Kawai ES120 and play. The gorgeous piano sound you hear is none other than the meticulously sampled sound of a handcrafted Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano, with all 88 keys painstakingly sampled and faithfully reproduced using Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging technology. This proprietary process accurately re-creates the immense dynamic range of the grand piano, giving you a truly impressive measure of expressiveness, from ppp to fff and beyond. If this were the only sound onboard the ES120, it would be a fabulous value, but there’s a total of 25 thrilling sounds, including orchestral strings, electric pianos, organs, vibes, harpsichord, choir, and more.

RHC Action gives you the feel of a real acoustic grand

Kawai developed their Responsive Hammer Compact Action used in the ES120 to capture the distinctive feel of an acoustic grand piano. With an innovative springless design that provides consistent upward/downward motion, this action gives you a natural, smooth, piano-playing experience. Newly updated with upgraded cushioning material, this latest RHC keybed features lower noise when keys are released. Just as acoustic piano hammers are heavier in the bass and get lighter as you move up toward the treble end of the keyboard, RHC action uses different hammer weights that are graded for each playing range. This fastidious attention to detail gives you maximum stability when playing fortissimo passages, while giving you the delicate pianissimo control you need.

Stirring realism through speakers and headphones

The ES120’s onboard 20-watt high-fidelity stereo speaker system is robust enough to deliver stirring realism and dynamic range in your living room and smaller performance spaces. The ES120 boasts comprehensive connectivity, including Bluetooth audio and MIDI, USB-MIDI, line out, and two headphone jacks featuring Spatial Headphone Sound technology, which enhances depth and realism while reducing listening fatigue during marathon practice or composing sessions.

Features to foster your development as a pianist

Kawai’s ES120 digital piano includes a 3-song recorder, letting you record your performances to internal memory and play them back at the touch of a button. For beginners, the ES120 offers Bluetooth connectivity, which allows for lesson functionality via the PianoRemote and PiaBookPlayer apps for iOS and Android. You can practice left- and right-hand parts for each piece separately, and adjust the onboard metronome tempo to master the more difficult passages. Dual and Split modes (and dual headphone jacks) let you collaborate with a teacher or a duet partner, while 192-note polyphony is more than enough to ensure that all your notes are heard.

Ideal for home, stage, and studio

With its dedicated line-out jacks and USB-MIDI ports, plus wireless Bluetooth audio/MIDI connectivity, the Kawai ES120 is ready for deployment anywhere — at home, in the studio, or onstage. At 26.5 pounds, it’s the ideal gigging partner. But the Kawai ES120 also does double duty as an ideal home piano with app-based lessons, Dual and Split modes, and Bluetooth for connecting to your smart devices. Fitted with its optional matching stand and triple-pedal assembly, its sleek contemporary design makes an elegant statement in your living room. And it’s available in three beautiful finishes to match any decor.

This Keyboard Is Really a Game Changer for Us.

We love this keyboard. My husband is going to be 80, and this keyboard is only 26.5 lbs. (The music rest is the additional pound.) Finally, a compact, lightweight keyboard that I can play, sounds good, and he can carry to our gigs. I am a pianist, and the piano sounds are really good. Of course there are somewhat better ones in much heavier keyboards, but this works well for real piano playing. I really love the SK-EX concert grand, especially when we plug the keyboard into a bigger speaker. There aren't a lot of other voices, but there's enough good ones for me to do interesting layering and splits, as well as single-voice performances. The keyboard action is light yet expressive. Before buying this, I tried the Yamaha P225, and the action was heavy and nothing like a real piano. (I am also disabled, and heavy digital actions are very hard on me and don't play at all like the grand pianos I've owned.) We are so grateful to have found this keyboard. With Bluetooth, I'm able to use the piano app, which makes it MUCH easier to use this keyboard, including adjusting the layer balance and save many more than the four registrations you can save in the keyboard itself. Plus we can also download backing tracks into my IPad and play them through the ES120 with its bluetooth capacity. I can use the IPad simultaneously to play backing tracks and control the keyboard. My husband can't sing through the keyboard, but he can sing through a separate speaker, and it's actually very easy to play the backing tracks through bluetooth without messing around with players and flash drives with lots of formatting issues. That makes it very easy to get backing tracks to work. I have two other much more expensive keyboards: the Casio Privia PX-s6000, which has more sounds, is a very playable keyboard and with more dynamic control, in my opinion. And we have a Yamaha Genos2, which allows me to play gorgeous voices, like saxophones, flugelhorns and spacey synths. But both instruments are both really too heavy for us to take out without help, which we can't afford on a regular basis and they'll stay home mostly for fun and home concerts. This is what we have needed. It is allowing us to go out and play without too much hassle, and that's the point of a portable keyboard. (I am disabled and can't help in this arena.) Thank you to Jonathan Pass who tested out the action for me before we bought it. This keyboard is a game changer for us.
Music background: Studied classical music as a child, but had to stop playing at 15. In my mid-70s, I started improvising and suddenly I had a career. We livestream on Facebook and YouTube, but we also play occasional concerts and will now be able to reach out to people wi

Kawai ES120

Even though I am a longtime customer, I didn't buy my ES120 from Sweetwater because I live on a different continent and shipping cost would have been prohibitive. However, since there aren't too many online reviews about the ES120, I thought I'd add my perspective here.

I had an opportunity to compare the ES120 with offerings by Yamaha and Casio in a similar price range. With the Yamaha keyboard, I found the response of the black keys was too stiff, the white keys were fine though.

When playing a few Casios at the shop, I felt they were the weakest of the lot. The "simulated ebony and ivory keys" were just horrible and irritating. The surface texture is too grainy, almost as if the keys were covered with fine sand. I'd pay money to NOT have this on my keyboard...

By way of comparison, the ES120 does everything right:

- Very realistic touch. It is a little on the light side but provides for enough resistance to not feel spongy. Very even response across the entire range.
- Surprisingly full sound through the internal speakers and headphone outputs.
- The basic piano tone is convincing and invites improvisation - always a good sign.
- Solid build quality. The keybed makes a small, perfectly acceptable acoustic noise, it is not clangy or rattly.
- Clever Bluetooth implementation, great for streaming audio from a phone or tablet to the keyboard.

At my main studio I have a Roland stage piano which is, of course, fantastic. The ES120 is an excellent addition for mobile work. When playing a VI like Keyscape, the ES120 is elevated to a whole new level.

Bang for the Buck!

I really couldn't be happier with this keyboard! Love the sound, love the feel. O.K. I don't have a "Vibes" preset, and one or two others that I might use occasionally but how often did I use those? If you live with the Rhodes and Wurli sound, as I do, I don't think that you'll find a better keyboard for the money!
