Vintage-Flavored Preamp and Program EQ from Industry Wunderkinds Black Lion Audio

Famed gear modding company, Black Lion Audio, has been building an impressive arsenal of unique studio gear, with variations on classic designs alongside wholly original creations. Joining that roster is the Black Lion Audio Eighteen channel strip. Something of a chimera, the Eighteen combines a transformer-based preamp with a 2-band passive induction EQ. Now, you can’t get more old school vibey than that! Sweetwater’s studio engineers found dialing up clean sounds on the Eighteen was no problem, but it really shines when driven into gooey analog saturation. Add just a little to make a vocal sit in the mix or crank it up on a mono drum overhead for bashy, Bonham-esque flexing. Spill the preamp into the program EQ for even more tonal control using the simultaneous boost and cut functionality to carve a thick but focused low end and mid- and high-range clarity. You’ll be shocked by how aggressive you can push the EQ without it ever sounding harsh or unpleasant. Need a little mojo in your studio front end? The Black Lion Audio Eighteen has it in spades!

About Black Lion Audio

Founded in Chicago in 2006, Black Lion Audio made its mark on the audio industry by hot-rodding audio equipment and upgrading the sound quality of popular music production gear, elevating industry-standard products to new levels of sonic quality. Though they started by modding gear from other manufacturers, Black Line Audio’s engineers have utilized their cumulative expertise to design the company’s own line of boutique mic preamps and word clocks. Black Lion Audio gear and modded gear can be found in studios from LA to New York to Nashville and heard on projects from artists like Maroon 5, Alison Krauss, Metallica, T-Pain, George Strait, MGMT, Beyoncé, George Duke, Slayer, Erykah Badu, Rod Stewart, and more.

Black Lion Audio Eighteen Channel Strip Features:

a tone shaping monster

I purchased a pair of Eighteen's to use in conjunction with my BLA Seventeen FET Compressors. Doing an increasing amount of mixing from home, I wanted an analog front end for my Apollo twin that would allow a bit more flexibility when working with stems that might lack depth, punch or just suffer from DI tone sucking. I can't say I expected anything less from BLA, but between the in/out transformers and the EQ there really isn't a tone and saturation you can't find with this unit. Kick drums come to life, rhythm guitars took on presence without radically changing their tone in the process and when processing stereo signals, the tone combinations seem somewhat limitless. I'll also say that the noise floor on these units is incredibly low, so give yourself plenty of headroom on input and feel free to drive this thing into goo. Highly recommended, and the price point is *Chefs kiss* good.

Best kept secret for under $

This is a great channel strip for left and right for vocals or for drums, especially on vocals with a golden age a2 definitely analog greatness I'll tell all my friends invest in analog gear. Leave all those keyboards alone. This is going to give you sound greatness and you will be happy one of the best products I invested in

My whole mic collection sounds better

I have been playing with the Eighteen for about a week now and I am very pleased with the sound. The 70 db of gain is plenty, enough for my passive ribbon mic that has very low signal output. With the input and output gains set to max it is still very quiet. All my mics, even my cheap dynamic and condenser mics sound much better. I am not used to using a vintage EQ but after watching some YouTube videos about the Pultec settings I figured out most of the Eighteen's knobs although I still don't know what the bottom right Atten Sel does.
