Delightfully Playable Semi-modular Analog Goodness

The Moog Grandmother semi-modular analog synthesizer had us at "built-in spring reverb," and there is plenty more creative potential here than meets the eye. You can start playing and designing sounds immediately — no patching required. The onboard arpeggiator and sequencer are a blast to play with, and you can even save three sequences for instant recall anytime. And with its 32-note Fatar keybed, the Grandmother is one of the best-feeling compact analog synths you'll find. Whether you need it for stage or studio, the Moog Grandmother offers a fresh take on the classic Moog synth sound.

Classic Moog architecture

The colorful interface on the Moog Grandmother makes its lineage clear. You have easy access to dual analog oscillators, each with triangle, saw, and square waves. You can add noise at the oscillator mixer stage, and a utility section features a patchable 1-pole highpass filter and a bipolar attenuator. The classic 4-pole ladder filter offers a convenient key-tracking switch and large controls that are easy to find even in the dark. An analog LFO and ADSR envelope generator complete the onboard modulation options — and synthesists at Sweetwater have come to love the dedicated fader to control envelope sustain.

Built-in spring reverb for unique sound design capabilities

Spring reverb has a unique character, with impressive sonic depth and vibrance. If you've played with a real spring reverb unit, you know that it's difficult to find digital emulations that come close to the real thing. And that's why Moog packed a real analog spring reverb into the Grandmother. It sounds fantastic and offers creative potential never before found on a Moog analog synthesizer.

All the connectivity

Right out of the box, the Moog Grandmother is ready to play, no patching necessary. For your Eurorack rig, Mother-32, DFAM, or other modular synthesizers, you've got a total of 41 patch points including 21 inputs, 16 outputs, and a 4-jack passive mult. You've got DIN MIDI in, out, and thru ports, plus USB MIDI for computer connectivity. Basically, you're ready to integrate with any modern production workflow.

Rapidly becoming my favorite synth in my studio

Moog and it's classic sounds!! The Grandmother can be all things.... a Gentle Grandma offering her cookies in a creamy rich classical Moog sound or She can rant and rave in a hellbent Acid type style playing with the Spring Reverb.... but one thing is for sure, you keep finding hidden treasures with this synth. Experimented with a few patches and found a richness that other synths take a lot more fiddling to achieve. The Grandmother can be for the beginner or seasoned synthesist. It really is a very versatile synth. I own various synths groove boxes and drum machines but my favorite have always been the Moog I have a Sound Studio 3 and the Grandmother just patches in so easy with the DFAM, Mother-32 or the Subharmonicon.... In general, the Grandmother is one synth I like spending a lot of exploration with..... a very well built sturdy workhorse.....

Not a Poly-Synth

This model is kind of old school. But the weight, material, power cord super solid. Great "mono" synth. - djb

Awesome Analog Synth!

I took advantage of the sale Sweetwater had and snagged one, there are so many different things you can do with this synth and I'm looking forward to learning everything there is to learn about it. The sound and versatility are amazing.

Still Exploring

If you know and like what Moogs are then this one will come of no surprise other than all the unique sounds you can create with the Grandmother. Though I haven't had it for that long, It certainly doesn't disappoint. What you can do with it is endless. It kind of reminds me of the Realistic Concertmate MG-1 by moog music that I used to have a long time ago only this is 1000 times better than that. I used to call that one the "Poor Man's Moog" However that didn't disappoint as well. But this definitely blows that one away. I am very satisfied with it.

Awesome

I watched YouTube videos and reviews all summer 2020. Finally purchased the Grandmother and literally had tears of joy when playing for the first time. It's pricey but the quality is great. Seems like synths are becoming more affordable. This is a great learning synth and so much fun.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

The Moog Grandmother was my first synthesizer. I wanted to learn the basics of synthesis, so I was attracted to its hands-on semi-modular design. Soon after opening the box, and by just playing around with it I learned how the different modules interacted with each other. Before I knew it, I was re-creating popular synth sounds from the '70s and beyond. I was soon exploring sonic scapes and textures I didn’t even know existed. It is an ever expanding source of inspiration.

Over the last 5 years as a producer and multi-instrumentalist I’ve played mostly with digital hardware and VSTs. I was searching for something I could create with that was colorful and also had sonic character. The Moog Grandmother is the perfect semi-modular keyboard for giving your production a nice rich, punchy sound. You can play it right out of the box without any patching, or you have the option to patch with its 41 patch points. I also love the sequencing and arpeggiator, which can be saved and recalled as a favorite. The spring reverb can be used with the Grandmother or with other instruments for effects. It’s very sturdy, well built, looks amazing and the perfect board to add to your production palette.

I have been making and recording music for almost 10 years, and software synths just were not cutting it anymore. Checking this thing out was one of the best decisions I have made. It has that classic Moog sound which goes perfectly with all sorts of electronic music, and even though it’s semi modular, all of the patching possibilities really helped to take the sound to that next level.

Shaun Yingling

As a synthesizer enthusiast and a keyboard player of many years, the Moog Grandmother is my go to monophonic synth. Its distinctive Moog style low-pass filter brings my sound alive and allows me to emulate many famous synth lines while still keeping its own distinct character. The semi-modular nature lets me bring a completely different sonic palate to any music I may be playing. Since adding it to my collection the Grandmother has been an essential part off my sound and my creative process.

Want real Moog sound? Take it from the die-hard analog synth masters here at Sweetwater: buy a Moog. It doesn't matter which one; their synths start at top quality and only go up from there. Sweetwater's relationship with Moog goes way back, and some of us fondly remember the last time Bob himself came to visit. Over the years, we've had the honor of watching Moog grow and evolve, and with synthesis experts like Daniel Fisher on staff, we're still one of the first companies to catch wind of new Moog products - they never fail to impress! Whether it's a classic reissue, a breakthrough new keyboard, or even a cool effects pedal, you can be sure anything you get from Moog will make you happy, and we'd love to tell you all about it.
