H8: Zoom’s Most Impressive Handy Recorder Yet

The Zoom H8 Handy Recorder represents the next step forward in portable recording technology. Boasting four XLR inputs, two XLR/TRS inputs, and ultra-clear microphone preamps, the H8 can capture high-quality audio from almost any source. Like its predecessor, the H8 features an XY mic module and Zoom's interchangeable capsule system. You can swap out microphone arrays and add extra inputs with optional modules. It records up to 12 tracks in crystal clear 24-bit/96kHz audio resolution, so your listeners feel like they're right there with you. And to top it all off, the Zoom H8 12-track Handy Recorder doubles as a USB audio interface for recording straight into a DAW. Built for podcasters, sound designers, and musicians, the Zoom H8 could be the last handheld recorder you ever need.

The H8 has an app to fit your needs

The Zoom H8 is built to be the perfect tool for content creators of all kinds. To do that, Zoom loaded the H8 with apps for three major branches of recording they are: the Podcast App, Music App, and Field App. Each app features customized controls and displays to better suit your workflow. From Foley artists to podcasters to musicians, the H8 has an app for it.

The Podcast App

Switch on the Podcast App, and the H8 changes into a mobile podcast production studio. Use the four Sound Pads to trigger your intro music, advertisements, special effects, and any other sound bites your podcast regularly uses. It comes with 13 pre-loaded sounds, but you can load any sound effect you want onto your SD card. The Podcast App accommodates a maximum of four microphones at once and records a separate track for each input.

The Music App

In the Music App, you can record, process, and mix entire songs. The home screen consists of labeled meters and faders for each input. Simply tap a track that you want to adjust, and you'll be taken to a new screen with a 3-band EQ, a panning knob, and a send level control. Tap on the effects section, and you get access to each patch consisting of 3 adjustable effects. And if that's not enough tonal versatility, use Zoom's Guitar Lab software via the USB output to gain access to extra effects.

The Field App

For on-location recording and sound design, use the Field App. It has large meters for at-a-glance monitoring of every sound source. It gives you quick access to useful tools like compression, low-cut filters, and adjustable phantom power. Finally, click the General menu to access other recorded projects and saved settings. and if you add the BTA-1 Bluetooth adapter to your H8, you can use the free iOS Control App to monitor your levels and record audio from a distance.

Flexible input configurations

The addition of Zoom's Capsule System 2.0 makes the H8 Handy recorder stand out from the crowd. First seen on the H5, the Capsule System gives the H8 greater functionality and flexibility. The H8 comes with the XYH-6 mic capsule, which consists of matched unidirectional mics in an XY configuration. However, if you're looking for more flexibility, Zoom offers other microphone configurations and an expander capsule for purchase. Compatible H8 capsules consist of the XAH-8 XY/AB mic, VRH-8 ambisonic mic, and the EXH-8 expander capsule that adds four extra XLR inputs. And if you have an old Zoom H6 lying around, you don't have to let its capsules go to waste! The H8 offers complete backward compatibility for every H6 mic capsule, which is a great reason to treat yourself to an upgrade.

Always ready for action

Recording in the field is always unpredictable, which is one of the things that makes it so difficult to get a good take. Luckily, Zoom equipped the H8 Handy Recorder with extra recording modes to alleviate some of the stress; Pre-record, Backup-record, and Auto-record. In Pre-record mode, H8 continuously buffers the last two seconds of audio and includes them with each take. So even if you hit record a fraction of a second too late, there's a good chance you caught the sound. The Backup-record function records a separate stereo mix at a lower volume level, which gives you a backup copy if an unexpected spike occurs. Finally, Auto-record starts recording when the volume passes a certain threshold.

Desktop stand not included.

Use it as a USB interface

The H8 isn't just a great option for recording, it doubles as a bona fide USB audio interface for conferencing, livestreaming, and old-fashioned recording. For livestreaming and video conferencing, Sweetwater recommends you use the Stereo Interface mode. It will sum all the inputs into a stereo signal and send it out to the recipients. If you're recording your band or live set, Multitrack mode is your best friend. Multitrack mode will send up to 12 channels straight to your DAW for easier editing.

Unbeatable value

I bought this on eBay for 200 euros still boxed. I was curious to check it out and another bonus for me was that it came with a thinned-out version of Cubase which I needed because I was having problems with Steinberg downloads (long story). Anyway, I have to say that it's a bit of a dream machine even at its retail price. The onboard mics are so much better than the ones on my Tascam dl44 and the first zoom I had (h4n). I uploaded a tune on youtube (link following this review) that I recorded in ten minutes or so on the H8. I actually have a fully-equipped studio(Allen and Heath gsr24m at the center of it) but I would love the challenge of doing a whole cd on this H8. The onboard effects are more than useable - in fact on my youtube vid it's all I used - I did clean it up only a little in Samplitude but 99 of the work was H8. It's very intuitive and the preamps are superb. Check it out! I would definitely buy this again. The Tascam portacapture is in some ways the closest gadget to this but the H8 is probably more flexible and doesn't look as sleek as the Tascam.

Excellent Sound!!!

Things you Must Know: 1) Music only goes to 48kHz 24 bit in Multitrack. Field = 96kHz 24 bit - Multitrack. Podcast goes to 48kHz 24 bit - Multitrack. 2) Zoom FX - Only when trks are 44.1 kHz 24bit 3) XY is what it is. 4) XLR MICS = Bring your own mics = Awesome!!!! Made test rec with TRK 1 = Neumann TLM 103 Mic and TRK 2 = Shure SM57. Added XY for room sound. NO FX. Recording Open Tuning Acoustic Guitar in tiled bathroom. First Impressions - Awesome portable recorder!

I've known of Zoom recording devices for a while, but once I discovered this unit on Sweetwater's website, I ordered it instantly. I have been using a Tascam DR-07 for mobile recordings for a few years now, but to see portable units with XLR inputs was not something I knew about until I discovered the Zoom H8. I had not been really looking for a new digital recorder until recently, so I am happy I discovered this!

I have done several test recordings with this unit in the first 24 hours i have had it. I'm super tech savvy, so the H8 was super simple to setup and use, but I think that even less tech savvy people will have no issues getting this up and running. The mic capsule included with the unit is a solid condenser style mic that picks up a lot in it's surroundings. It's a solid choice for general recordings. But the XLR inputs are where H8 shines.

With 4 XLR inputs and 2 XLR-1/4 combo inputs, this unit is loaded with options. And with the Capsule 2.0 system, you can purchase not only other mics, but an additional unit to add more XLR inputs. I was able to connect a Shure Sm58 and a Seinhausser MKE 600 shotgun mic to the unit and record them onto individual tracks along with the XYH Capsule mic. The shotgun mic requires phantom power, which the H8 has for all inputs.

Everything worked flawlessly. The clarity and quality is amazing from the pre-amps. You have a couple options for compression and limiters inside the unit, but moving the tracks to a PC hard drive to edit in a DAW was the option I made, and after applying my plugins and doing a little mixing, everything sounds amazing. It's as high quality as my Focusrite 18i20 is. That's something I find impressive for a portable battery powered device. Our technology has come a long way since my first digital recorder!

I've read reviews from others saying they dislike look of the unit. While it can be a little odd at first glance, the design serves it's purpose. Especially if you plan on using it for a multi-mic pod cast session. Place in the middle of the tale, plug in, and go. To me, the design is fine. It performs well and does what I need it to, and if the look is really a concern to you, with longer XLR cables and the ability to mount it to a tripod or stand, it can easily be out of site if need be. I personally have no issues with the design or how it looks. The lighter plastic it is amde of can be a concern if it gets dropped, however. I thought a heavier plastic or even a metal chassis would have been better, but at this price point, I can't complain.

I will say, the micro USB connector over USB-C is an odd choice for a unit manufactured in 2020-2021. To me, this is not a deal breaker. I have all types of USB cables on hand for all sorts of situations in my cable bag.

I love the fact that you can run it on a USB port bus power as well. So if you have a computer near by, or a USB power bank, you can power the unit just by plugging in the USB cable. The other impressive feature with this is, as long as you have 4 AA batteries installed, there is no interruption with your recordings if you remove the USB cord. And once you plug a USB cord in, it automatically uses the USB bus power over the batteries. Very useful to save on the AA batteries if you USB ports nearby, but can quickly go mobile and unplug the USB cable if you are on the go.

An odd issue I experienced that is worth mentioning. If you use this unit to close to a Wi-Fi router, you will get an audible recording of the Wi-Fi's radio signal. I was not sure at first what this odd noise was when I was editing the recorded tracks in my DAW, but I later discovered the noise got louder/weaker as I moved the unit around my desk. When i got right next to the router, the sound was loud and clear in my headphones and in the recordings. So keep the unit a good distance from wireless routers.

So far I am very pleased with this recorder. I'll be trying it with my GoPro this weekend in some longer recording sessions to sync it's audio with the GoPro video in my editor.

The Zoom H8 is a Beast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This product is great. It does everything as advertised. Once I spent some time exploring all of it's features I was not disappointed. It is versatile, and customizable . The LCD screen is just large enough to display the software controls. I use it for everything from recording bands but mostly for Livestreaming events .I mounted it on a custom Smallrig cage and it works great. I have not had any issues with it. Yes indeed! I would highly recommend this product purchase, especially if you own an Intel or Mac computer, or i-Pad. The H8 is worth every penny I spent as it produces professional sound quality in a small portable package.
