A Complete 6-pc Drum Kit w/ Cymbals and Hardware

Buying a "budget" set of drums can sometimes feel like a bit of a gamble. But at Sweetwater, we're committed to making sure you get your money's worth out of the gear you buy. That's why we stand behind our TAMA Imperialstar complete drum sets. For starters, you just can't beat the value of these kits, which come with a complete set of stage-ready TAMA hardware and quality Meinl cymbals. The 6-ply poplar shells themselves sound remarkably balanced and responsive, too, making this the kind of kit you buy as your first and end up holding onto for life. A host of exciting new wrapped finishes for 2019 makes the Imperialstar an irresistible buy for any level drummer.

Includes all you need — just add sticks

TAMA takes the guesswork out of assembling a truly playable set of drums. Included with your Imperialstar is a quality set of Meinl HCS cymbals — 14" hi-hats, a 16" crash, and a 20" ride — for a stage-ready sound. A TAMA single-chain drive kick pedal provides a smooth playing action for your bass drum, and a full selection of TAMA hardware provides the stability you need. The cherry on top is an Imperialstar drum throne, which provides comfort for long playing sessions.

The warm, balanced tone of poplar

The shells of your TAMA Imperialstar are made from six plies of lightweight poplar. Poplar is known for its quick decay and full-bodied tone, which are just the qualities you want for close-miking applications onstage and in the studio.

100% glued wraps

Unlike some others kits, the Imperialstar's attractive wrapped finishes are glued 360° around the shells to eliminate buzzing or lifting of any kind. This leads to long-lasting good looks and a more consistent, resonant tone throughout the kit.

Better performance through precision bearing edges

Bearing edges play a big part in how your drums sound and tune up over time. Fortunately, TAMA's edge-cutting process produces clean bearing edges on all the Imperialstar's shells. The result is a set of drums that ring true, with a wide tuning range and sensitive playing dynamics to suit most styles of music.

Professional drums at an entry level price

Playing and sometimes owning Gtetsch, Ludwig and DW drums in the past, I'm impressed with the build quality of these so-called "beginner drums". The finish is excellent, the hardware is solid with double braced stands and the rims correctly mount to the shells just like the more expensive kits. The Meinl (German) cymbals match the brightness and tone of this drum kit design. Twenty years ago "beginner drums" couldn't compare with the quality of this kit. Tama did their design homework putting this kit together.

So what is the difference between much more expensive kits? This kit uses poplar wood shells creating a rich and brighter tone with extended resonance versus more expensive and dense maple wood for dialing in lower frequencies with less resonance. Thus the bright cymbals to match. Playing short notes at speed with less resonance is good without distortion if your talent gets to that level.

The snare drum is 5x14 with one throw lever to engage the snares. More popular and expensive snare drums are 6x14 with two throw levers more about easier aligning the snares and often have more strands than this one. Snares are easily replaced at low cost. The levers don't matter as just more manual adjustments to get it right. Still the Tama coated head on this snare drum is pretty responsive and while I like Evans heads it is pretty close. Still I got the snare pretty tight knowing how to tune one. Note mastering the snare drum is what drumming is all about. Maybe purchase a good one and see if you can later go with a drum kit. All those paradiddles and getting two hands and your brain works nicely playing other drums.

I added some gel pads on the drum heads and the resonance duration quickly dropped off without having to purchase maple shell versions. My Tama included a 5x14 snare drum which I got pretty tight. Using an electronic drum tuner I could dial this kit into octaves which some recording producers think is important being in the key of the tune. Then I went back to my own ear tuning for what a drum kit should sound like. It is awesome. I loved it then purchased two more stands, Menil 18" crash and China cymbals and some Latin toy makers. I also went for the Imperialstar 7x8 small tom in candy apple mist that is hard to find. Thanks to Sweetwarer and Al Becerra it took 6 weeks to find one but he pulled it off. These guys are great.

This Tama kit is probably the best deal on the planet providing everything you need to be a great drummer without costing a fortune. Tama didn't skip on quality putting this kit together. It is up to you to make the best of your talents using it. It is not what you play but the dedication to play it well.

Meanwhile I have three dogs in my home who pee on anything made of wood. They don't come near my Tama drums. Go figure.
