Neumann’s Next-gen DSP Nearfield Monitor

When Neumann introduced its KH 120 compact nearfield monitor, studio professionals listened up. After all, Neumann is the granddaddy of pro audio transducer manufacturers, having debuted their first microphone — the CMV 3 — in 1928. Now, the KH 120 II builds on the considerable success of its predecessor with across-the-board improvements: more power, an onboard DSP engine, deeper bass response, higher SPL capability, and even better resolution. The internal DSP power facilitates linear-phase crossovers and room-adaptive alignment with Neumann’s groundbreaking MA 1 Automatic Alignment system. As you would expect of a Neumann product, the KH 120 II is designed for unerring monitoring accuracy and, thanks to its impeccable build quality, will provide you with dependable service, session after session, year after year.

Mathematically Modeled Dispersion waveguide

The magnetically shielded aluminum cabinet is loaded with a long-throw, composite-sandwich 5.25-inch woofer and a titanium-fabric 1-inch dome tweeter. A 145-watt amplifier drives the woofer, while the tweeter obtains its power from a 100-watt amp. The front baffle incorporates Neumann’s Mathematically Modeled Dispersion (MMD) waveguide, which helps produce a broad sweet spot and smooth off-axis response. In a stereo configuration, the KH 120 delivers rock-solid imaging with a satisfying sense of depth.

A monitor worthy of the Neumann badge

The KH 120 II exhibits a smooth, natural frequency response, delivering bass amazingly well for its diminutive size. Its midrange presentation is detailed and revealing, neither overly forward nor recessive. The KH 120 II is fitted with a full complement of control settings for integration into a variety of acoustical environments. Sweetwater’s take? You can confidently make critical EQ and mix placement decisions with this speaker. The KH 120 II is a true reference monitor and carries on the lofty legacy signified by the Neumann badge.

Superlative

The KH120 II is superlative. It is very similar to the KH 150's I have. The only difference is slightly less bass extension. It has very flat frequency response and low distortion. I use them in nearfield. I must say, however, that I like Neumann monitors in general. I have 13 of them. TES Productions. Soundclick.com/ThomasShea

The Best Monitors Money Can Buy

Now that I have a pair of these monitors, I can totally confirm what this review said about them:

There's a deep clarity and accuracy to the sound of the KH120 II. Its overall tonal balance is consistently and reliably neutral and its ability to create extraordinarily well‑focused stereo images speaks of really well sorted electro‑acoustic design. But it's not just tonal balance and imaging that impresses. The KH120 II reveals mix detail and insight throughout the audio band in a way that makes mix work a pleasure. There's no guesswork. It's all there. The slight reduction of low‑frequency bandwidth and maximum level compared to the KH150 is noticeable in a direct comparison, but heard on its own, KH120 II bass is both impressively extended and usefully informative of pitch and dynamics. And I can't really imagine running out of nearfield volume level in any reasonable work scenario with the KH120 II. There wouldn't be too many occasions in a smallish studio space where you'd need a nearfield monitor with more bass and volume potential.

The KH150 and now the KH120 II demonstrate without doubt that Neumann's monitor design team not only have a very clear idea of what's needed in electro‑acoustic terms to create really effective nearfield monitors, but how to put those ideas affordably into practice. They're on fire.

Excellent Near Field Monitors

Neumann has updated MA-1 to work with the KH 120 IIs, and overall they're excellent near field monitors. Extremely tight, very detailed and overall just a pleasure to listen to (unless your mix is bad, as they'll certainly reveal it). Very happy with the purchase now that MA-1 is working correctly.
