Best of the best-- tried them all

I went on a quest of sorts to get a better keyboard sound from my pair of KC-500s that were at least 20 years old. Note: I never had an issue with the KC-500s but thought after more than 20 years, there might be something that sounded better. For me better sound = more fun and more time playing. My setup is a Roland RD-2000, Korg KRONOS, Roland Cloud, and Specrasonics Keyscape.

I tried the Motion Sound KP-612SX (and extension cabinet SL512), pair of Bose L1 Pro 8, Aspen Pittman Spacestation w/ Behringer B12000 sub and a Roland KC-400 and Roland KC-600 as a pair.

In general, I had no problems getting electric pianos, organs and synths to sound good, but acoustic piano was completely a different story. So this review is focusing solely on how well I could reproduce a very detailed acoustic piano sound with the various amps listed above. Note: all amps were tested in my home studio using the exact same keyboards.

Bose L1 Pro 8 — very frizzy starting one octave above middle C with both keyboards. I ordered directly from Bose because of the free return policy. I tried every permutation of the setup and even had a former band mate who loves his try and help, and neither of us could get a decent acoustic piano sound.

Spacestation / Behringer sub - the sub completely over powered the Spacestation and it was very hard to balance. The Spacestation side speaker had a laser beam effect on certain notes above middle C. These notes were amplified much greater than the adjacent notes and it shot an unpleasing sound into your ear. I had the Spacestation on the floor in a corner, in the middle of the room, on a stand and horizontally and vertically. At least for my room, I couldn't make it work. So out of everything I tried, it was the most finicky on room placement. I returned it because I couldn't imagine gigging with something that room placement would be so critical.

Roland KC-600 / 400. This was an experiment I tried to see how a 15" and 12" would work. Interestingly the RD-2000 sounded the best (by far) through the KC-600 and the Kronos sound best by far through the KC-400. These speakers weren't matched as well as I imagined so I should have had a matching pair. I also had a lot of phasing issues between them. The best configuration was the KC-600 on the floor tilted and the KC-400 on a stand. The angle of the KC-400 was critical to minimize phasing. However, these amps or their cabinets didn't resonate well. I had to use some delay and a lot of reverb to get a natural sounding acoustic piano. I also had to run my output audio cables directly into each amp and then I used a spectrum analyze to EQ and balance each keyboard. This took a lot of work and when I was done the acoustic piano was just ok. I even bought Keyscape because it is supposed to be some of the best piano sounds and it had a muddy sound that I couldn't EQ successfully.

Motion Sound KP-612SX and SL512 Extension Cabinet. All I had to do was cut the bass and slightly boost the mids. There is a natural reverb (almost like a good Fender tube amp) from the cabinet that none of the others above have. I wound up reducing the reverb on many of the factory patches and both the RD-2000 and the Kronos sound amazing.

I have been using the Motion Sound setup daily (multiple hours) for 7 months and absolutely no issues. There is no hiss and the sound is as pleasing as super high end studio monitors. Even though each Motion Sound is a single point stereo, I have the two of them placed left and right and I get this amazing room filling sound. Stereo patches sound amazing and of course since they are matched, the sound is balanced.

While this is the most expensive setup I tried, I would highly recommend it. The amp and the extension cabinet are much lighter than the Roland KC-600 and pretty easy to carry-- even for an old guy. The sound quality will simply blow you away.

Perfect for me, and great support from Motion Sound

I needed a "manageable" combo amp for live gigs. In my studio, I tend to use a Yamaha Montage, Hammond XK3C dual manual, along with a mixture of 6 hardware synths (Access, Moog, Prophets), but I needed a good stereo combo amp for a smaller rig (4 boards). I'm now using a Radial 4 channel keyboard mixer with the Motion Sound 612SX. I had concerns about it being able to handle the frequency range - especially with the Hammond, but it is ideal. The 612SX, by itself is fine for a small room. I've added the 512S (2X12 slave) for additional reinforcement, if needed. I had thought I may need a sub, but I don't. With the Hammond, I'm also using a Lounsberry Tall and Fat, a Vent 2 leslie sim, and an Eventide TimeFactor. That combination is reproduced really well with the MS612SX. I also use a Lounsberry Organ Grinder at times, but I really like the overdrive I'm getting just from the Vent 2 with the Tall and Fat to the Radial and into the 612SX. It really is an ideal set up for me. I'm running 4 stereo boards into the stereo amp. No rattle at all even with the Hammond cranked. And I love the fact that there are casters, and it is just really well designed. The stereo field/immersion is really good. And a big nod to John at Motion Sound for his assistance in helping me with my conversion from the original 612S to the 612SX.

Motion Sound KP-612SX Initial Impressions

I received the new Motion Sound KP-612SX last week, and wanted to play with a band prior to posting a brief review.  Now having done so, I am very pleased to report that, in short, I am initially very pleased with this keyboard amp!
Disclaimer:  I am in no way compensated or associated with this manufacturer.  I paid full price, and these are my personal impressions, solely for the purpose of sharing with fellow professional keyboard players.
Background:
For years, I was carting two (2) Bose L1 Model 2 w/B2 subs as my keyboard amplification.  They are very good, although keys are not their sweet spot (vocals and acoustic guitars are).  Add some 100+ pounds each, six hard cases, the stage real estate required and transport was a bear.  To lighten the load (among several other reasons beyond the scope of this post), I tried several powered speakers, and in that price range, the Yamaha DXR-10s were, IMO, the best sounding and value.  Accordingly, I have been satisfactorily using them for quite some time.  But they have draw backs also, of course, which include having to put them on poles in order to get the needed sound level, which was blasting my bass player's ears, etc.  As well as the "boxy" sound associated with this type of amp/speaker, and they would run out of steam at high volume levels (plenty "loud", but at the sacrifice of a full-range quality sound).  Plus I'm getting old, and am looking for less total weight and greatly reduced set-up/tear-down time, and reduced complexity in general.  All I really want is, to the maximum extent possible, for both myself and the audience to hear the best live keyboard sound possible, in stereo.  Accordingly, the new Motion Sound KP-612SX is my latest attempt at achieving these goals.
My Impressions:
The MS 612SX comes with casters (the 610 with 10-inch speakers does not), making transport that much easier, (along with handles on the top and sides).  And at a total weight of 49 pounds (which includes its own 2-channel on-board mixer), it accomplishes for me a real reduction in weight, complexity and set-up time, while still retaining a high-quality full-range tone, in noticeable stereo, with plenty of power (my goals).  Carting only 1 relatively light box, plugging my keys directly into it, and still having an excellent STEREO sound is like a dream come true for me.  This is the amp I've dreamed of since I was a kid!  I am frankly amazed at the sound quality.  I was spurred on by the Al Quinn comparison video comparing the RCF TT08As vs a MS KP-610.  I'd have to say that, with the 12-inch speakers, it has very respectable bass response and high end.  I'm sure it's not as balanced and clear as the RCF TT08As (which cost thousands more).  But I dare say it's respectably close.  And in its own way, it's a really good sound for a piano keyboard (as well as all the other voices).  I'm still experimenting with the "stereo expander", deciding if I like it or even need it (it's effect varies greatly upon the source's stereo separation).  Still trying to decide if it's just a gimmick, or really value-added.  On certain sounds, wow, it really does expand the audible stereo separation, but definitely changes the tone response.  Probably very subjective.  The on-board tone controls are very effective and responsive, IMO.  BTW, I closed my eyes and listened to the sound quality as I turned each of the mixer knobs, stopping at where I felt is the best achievable tone balance…. to my surprise, it sounds best at all controls set nearly "flat" (ie. 1/2 way).  Regarding overall tone output for piano - I've found it to be very good, from high to low.  It is the 1st keyboard amp where I've found placement to be less important.  I've moved it all around my rehearsal room, in front of me, behind, to the left and right - and I'm amazed at still how consistent the sound quality is, and how well I hear the "stereo" effect.  Playing with a rock band, I was able to gauge its effective volume level (aka "keeping up with the screaming guitar").  And It does just fine, has plenty of headroom while still maintaining great sound quality.  Motion Sound recommends raising it 2 feet, but the amp stand I ordered did not fit this amp due to the caster and power plug socket locations.  So my listening to date has been with the amp sitting on the floor on casters.  I have owned other keyboard amps (e.g. Roland KC-500's and KC-990), and this one is, by far, much, much better.  It does not come with a cover, so I purchased one from "Le Cover", and am also very pleased with it.  I also tried using the "slave" speakers outputs (with no additional amps), and it works great, but more than I need.  And last but not least, in response to some past comments - I found the overall build quality, including the feel of the pots (dials), to be completely satisfactory.

I am on a quest to reduce the amount of gear and transport weight and time, while maintaining a pro sound for live gigging, at a reasonable price.  I think this MS KP-612SX is the closest I've yet come to "ideal".  Until the next new big thing….
