I was using it wrong

I live in a very dry desert environment. I kept a hygrometer in the case and was getting readings in the 30% to 40% range, even at the sound hole. I was squeezing too much water out of the sponge from fear of dripping into the guitar. Now I soak the sponge, give it a slight pinch at the bottom, and put it back in the holder. It doesn't drip, and even if it did (a little) there are no holes on the edges. Humidity is around 50% now at the middle of the neck, probably higher in the body.

Humitar works great in New England

I've been using the Humitar for almost six years now - in a number of guitars. I've found nothing else as convenient or reliable. In the driest months of winter, the sponge doesn't dry out for 2 weeks.

Over time, some of the sponges have developed mold, as some have mentioned. One sponge did so in the first year, but the others took a few years. That's not that surprising considering the sponge is always wet and sitting in an enclosed environment for months. I also humidify my house in the winter, so that may contribute to the development of mold.

At the start of winter, I soak any sponges that have mold on them in a solution of 1 tablespoon bleach to a pint of warm water for as long as it takes to remove the mold spots. I then rinse a few times with water. That's usually all it takes for the whole season, but I'll do it again if one of them starts to get a lot of spots in the middle of the winter. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the sponge other than lightening its color. It doesn't dissolve or fall apart or stop holding the same amount of water.

Best humidifier I've used

I've been playing guitar since the 1960's. I have owned many guitars over the years and have had issues in the past with cracking due to low humidity. Since then I have always made an effort to keep the humidity up in my home and in my guitar cases. I live in Montana and often see 15-20% rh in the house if not addressed. The smartest investment was a humidifier for the house. But I still keep one of these in each acoustic guitar soundhole, whether in a case or on a stand.

I've never used distilled water. The sponges last me 2-3 years. I have to re-wet them every 5 days or so. They might get slightly discolored, but I've never seen mold or had any issues like another reviewer. I have nothing negative to say about this humidifier, it's the best of all the types/brands I've tried. To the person who dropped it on their guitar and suggested the company should think about changing the material this is made out of... Would you complain to Craftsman if you dropped a wrench on your car and damaged it? Of course not. Not the humidifiers fault at all.

No need to spend any more than this

I have been using these with all 3 of my acoustic guitars, 2 of them for more than 2 years. I've ordered a set of replacement sponges only once. I have a bathroom adjacent to my music room, so I just keep a gallon jug of distilled water under the sink and I re-soak the sponges as needed. They eventually start turning black (but mine have never smelled at all), so I soak them in a 10% bleach-water solution for 10 minutes or so. Wring, rinse, good to go.

They Work Great!

I bought 3 of these for the acoustic guitars in my apartment. They are easy to use and the lid for replacing the sponge inside is a nice touch. My old humidifier did not open and there was definitely mold on the sponge at a certain point, not a problem I foresee with these! Just rewet the sponge once a week and you should be good to go.
