Modern Synthesis, Reimagined: MODX+

Yamaha’s MODX series took their suite of creative and technological prowess and packed it into a high-performance synthesizer, engineered for modern needs. The MODX+ builds off this forward-thinking model to accommodate even greater sonic opportunities, bringing your total polyphony to an astounding 256 notes. Plus, the MODX OS introduces new features that include Voices and Live Sets, offering robust flexibility in both composition and performance. The onboard flash memory has been upgraded to 1.75GB, creating more room for your sounds and samples from your collection for more personalized expressive potential. Like its predecessor, the MODX+ is packed with powerful technologies ported from Yamaha’s flagship Montage series. State-of-the-art upgrades from their MOXF line include the AWM2 sample and synthesis engine, fortified with eight times more waveforms, alongside a powerful 8-operator FM-X engine modernized for amazingly dynamic sonics and complex sound design, as well as Motion Control Synthesis for seamless integration and powerful control of both sound engines.

What's new with MODX+

  • 256-note total polyphony, with 128-note stereo from the AWM2 engine and 128-note FM-X
  • MODX OS provides expanded instrumentation and composition abilities, including new features with Voices, Live Sets, and more
  • 1.75GB expanded onboard flash memory to personalize your library
  • GHS weighted action mimics acoustic pianos with heavier keys in the low end, lighter at the high end

Packed with sophisticated features

In addition to the AWM2 and FM-X sound engines, the Yamaha MODX8+ is packed with sophisticated features (many handed down from Montage), including the Super Knob, which gives you simultaneous control over multiple parameters; the ability to send 10 and return four audio channels plus 16 MIDI channels to/from your computer or iOS device over USB; Live Sets, which allow for Performance organization without copying, renaming, or changing order; and an A/D input that processes external audio sources through the MODX+ DSP.

Also onboard is Yamaha's Motion Sequences feature, which drives synth parameters via rhythmic control data you can intuitively interact with in real time; an Envelope Follower that lets you use internal or external audio as a synth parameter control source; and a Vocoder effect that re-creates the classic voice-synth sound. Four-part Seamless Sound Switching, the capacity for 27 simultaneous effects, an onboard 4-in/10-out audio interface, and 1.75GB of internal flash memory complete the feature set. The Yamaha MODX8+ gives you a powerful modern synthesizer, a potent controller with a multichannel USB audio/MIDI interface for extensive DAW and VST control, and an expressive 88-note GHS variably weighted keyboard to drive it all.

A powerful instrument that does it all

Keyboardists at Sweetwater have long respected the top-notch sounds Yamaha loads into their keyboards, and the Yamaha MODX8+ is no exception. From stunningly realistic acoustic and electric pianos, guitars, basses, and drums to orchestral instruments to vintage and modern synth sounds, each patch is expertly crafted down to the finest detail, so you can call up any preset you like and never have to worry about tweaking your tone. When you're in the mood to patch from scratch, however, the Yamaha MODX8+ provides a robust set of sound-sculpting tools for realizing your ultimate musical vision.

Add to that a full complement of VCM-based effects and processors, and you’ll never run out of creative possibilities. Yamaha's MODX8+ boasts a broad selection of effects for both the internal sounds and for use with the A/D inputs, giving you access to the same effects found in Yamaha's professional digital recording consoles. And the Yamaha MODX8+ supports the use of 27 effects simultaneously, so you can polish your tracks to perfection.

Yamaha MODX8+ 88-key Synthesizer Features:

  • Expressive GHS variably weighted keys are heavier in the low notes, lighter in the high notes, mimicking acoustic piano play
  • Motion Control Synthesis unifies and controls AWM2 and FM-X sound engines
  • 256-note total polyphony: 128-note stereo AWM2 + 128-note FM-X
  • Super Knob controls multiple parameters simultaneously for highly expressive sound interaction
  • Send 10/receive 4 audio channels plus 16 channels of MIDI via a single USB cable
  • Live Sets allow Performance organization without copying, renaming, or changing order
  • 4-Part Seamless Sound Switching: change Performances while holding notes without sound or effect cutoff
  • Direct Control Assignment assigns controls at the touch of a button
  • The A/D input processes external audio sources with your instrument’s DSP
  • Motion Sequences drive synthesizer parameters through rhythmic control data you can interact with in real time

The MODX8+ Wins with all thumbs Up!

My very first keyboard I have ever purchased for myself. I have purchased others for my church group and my male chorus groups, but for my self I wanted nothing but the best because I believe in buying the best so I don't regret later. I am still learning about this wonderful synthesizer/keyboard and know I have a long way to go to know everything about it, but I am patiently working my way through. Wonderful staff at Sweetwater and I have one of the best sales engineers on the planet earth. Logan has helped me outfit churches, private groups and my own personal equipment for my self. Thanks Sweetwater for such an anointed sales engineer.

Amazing Synth. A lot to learn though...

I've owned every synth since 1983 and this one is excellent. The sounds and samples are superb. The manual is the worst I've ever seen. The whole performance thing is baffling and time-consuming so if you have a good computer use the DAW function. The Live Set is most useful. Some of the assign buttons 1 & 2 are mind-blowing. Kudos to the programmers. Yamaha should have had more videos on how to use this amazing keyboard. The youtube videos are helpful but very simplistic. I love the keyboard! Since I have limited time to play with it it could take years to do what I want to do.

Everything most will need

I'm a long time piano/keyboard player, and have always gone for the high-end workstation keyboard within the product line: Motif ES, Motif XF, Korg KRONOS; plus Apple laptop, MainStage, Logic, Native Instruments, Keyscape and so on. The MODX+ fulfills everything I need a keyboard to do in one package: It's 30 pounds, 88 keys, sounds great, has a very nice touch and can load all my past Motif patches, to include ALL the performances from the Motif XF.

It does not have all the knobs, sliders and external in/out potential as the high-end workstation models, but I never used those anyways, so the MODX+ has all I need.

Since I have a long background with Yamaha's way of doing things, I adapted to the MODX+ pretty quick. Those new to the brand would do well to watch the many YouTube instructional videos to get the most out of this tool. Keep in mind that everyone has a different setup, style, and use case (live, studio, stereo, mono, etc.), so learning to tweak any keyboard is essential to fit your needs. Once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much accomplish anything you're looking to do (sound shaping, splits, new performances, etc, etc) with MODX+. Keep in mind that your settings may be great at home, but live will need some tweaking, so learn how. As a tip, setting the keyboard velocity to your taste is highly suggested as the fist thing you do. This makes a BIG difference. (Utility - Settings - Velocity...)

I like the way the pattern and song sequencer works, and find most use for the song mode for capturing ideas. It's just a few touches away once you have it set up for your most common uses. The pattern sequencer has always been a "go to" for me, as you can lay down some backing for live use, then play back as needed when live.

Of all the keyboards I have (or had), I like the MODX+ the best of all. (The Kronos is great, but man, is it heavy!!) There really is no better tool for me at this price point. Yes, I did spend time with the Fantom 08, and it's a great option as well, but for me, the MODX+ was the best choice.

I am a contemporary style church musician most of the time, and while MainStage with the various commercial overlay products are good, they do not fit my use case. I prefer to be in the moment, and sound like me, so I make no attempt to sound like a 50 piece orchestra, or one of the popular mega-church 10 piece stage bands with loops and heaven only knows what else going on. It's just me and a guitar player most of the time, so being in the moment and playing from your heart means more than anything I believe. Not having to fiddle with a hundred things to sound great is a real blessing!

Here's an idea: If you are trying to decide between a Montage and Fantom, for about the same money, go with the MODX+8, and the Fantom07. That would be a killer combo in my view. :)
Music background: Piano, keyboards and guitar. Mostly contemporary Christian, often in the singer/songwriter style.

Good synth for the stage

I belong in 2 bands currently and gig quite often. I like that it's light weight and the (sets) best interface for quick patch selection for gig nights. Only some minor things... The new montage has a shift/transpose combo close together. That would be awesome for switching songs and transposing up or down on the fly. And I find that the key bed was good (quiet and tight) for about a year or so... after that, the middle of the board (the area that sees the most action), the keys are getting loose and noisy. It makes me worry about this key beds longevity. Lastly, I also own a Yamaha S90XS stage piano. I love that it takes a straight power cable and NOT an adapter. It makes the MODX seem more like a toy instead of a professional instrument. Yamaha should fix this. Standard computer power cable would Rock!!
Music background: Keys player in an 80's Rock Tribute Band. Not pro but not just a weekend warriro either.
