Plenty of options

Essentially a single channel of the Mic Pre IV, the Mic Pre One features switchable phase, 20dB mic input pad and +48V phantom power, plus a selectable 1/4-inch line/hi-Z instrument input, all utilizing relays with gold bi-furcated contacts.

Simple layout, complete control

Two large knurled aluminum knobs control the variable highpass filter (10-200Hz) and continuously variable input gain, which is complemented by a full-width, twenty-segment bi-color LED meter. The rear of the unit offers a Jensen transformer-isolated mic input and fully-balanced XLR output, plus a 1/4-inch line output. A fourth connector introduces DC power from the external power supply to the unit.

The Daking story

Having broken into the music industry as the drummer for '60s psychedelic band the Blues Magoos, Geoff Daking went on to truly make his mark designing and building boutique-quality studio gear. His company's latest offerings not only look classic, sound great, and perform solidly - you'll be knocked out by their decidedly non-boutique prices. Daking puts a premium on putting quality components at the heart of his gear, from circuits to transformers to amplifiers, while implementing modern techniques to ensure reliable, consistent performance.

  • Transformer balanced input, electronically balanced output

Daking Mic Pre Big Warm sound

I wasn't going to spend past my budget but I'm so glad I did.
The quality of the build and parts usually only in much higher

Well built and sounds great.

A worthwhile addition to my collection and likely yours. It is not a "magic bullet" but will make sure that the preamp section of your chain is reliable and solid. I got tired of tubes and the worry that it may die in the middle of a session with a client. I am not disappointed.

An excellent preamp

I've now had this for a month or so and I'm quite impressed. Using the Daking as a slightly different flavored "nice" channel (my main pres are the quite decent Audient ASP880).

I don't have any fancy Neumanns or Gefells to run through it, but it pairs very nicely with dynamic mics: Shure SM7B, EV RE20, Beyer 201 and M88, a couple cheap ribbons. The M88 is my favorite vocal mic for my particular voice and style, and is perfectly paired with the Daking.

With one of the ribbons, which is a long ribbon RCA clone, I think the ASP may have a slight edge because of the adjustable impedance, which basically turns that one into 3 different mics in one. On the other, some cheap Nady thing, the impedance doesn't seem to matter as much and I prefer the Daking. Tons of lovely clean gain for even a quiet dynamic.

WRT condensers, it's a dream with AT4047 (smooooooth combination on vox) and AT4050 (my go-to for cello). Also quite nice with a Bluebird and a modded Oktava MK-219. I slightly waffled between it and the Audient pres for acoustic guitar using a (non-modded) Oktava MK-012; sort of depends on the guitar and the song. The sweepable high pass filter is awesome, but so is the one on the Audient.

Another serious application is as a bass DI. I quite like the Audient's JFET DIs for guitar and bass, but the Daking is next level with my fretless Fender Jazz. It just sits perfectly, and I haven't even been tempted to mic up a cab since I got it.

Build quality is great. Smooth, solid pots. Only complaint is that they aren't stepped, so level matching with a second unit you'd need to use your ears/eyeballs. The ASP doesn't have that feature either, although it does have markings around the knobs which make this easier. But it's not a biggie for me except now I kind of want a second one. Nice heavy steel case like a Radial DI. Feels like you could hammer a nail with it or at least brain someone.

Ease of use: No real notes, no bells and whistles. You need to hit a button to use the 1/4" DI, which took me a second to figure out. The phase switch does what it should, ditto phantom power. Haven't used the pad. The HPF is excellent and intuitive. If you understand these basic functions of a preamp you're not going to have any trouble using it.

A Solid Mic Pre

This product does what's advertised. It allows a mic signal to be boosted clear to line level without coloring the sound negatively or introducing other artifacts.

It also has no noticeable self noise. You are getting single channel of a great professional level pre-amp, at a reasonable cost. The construction is also very solid. I'm very satisfied.

My sales engineer, Lee Cook, also got in touch with me quickly after the purchase and has been very helpful. You don't get one on one treatment like that outside of a local shop. Very impressive.

Solid.

This is a great piece of kit. It gets almost daily use in my home studio. Great clean gain with minimal coloration. the 70dB of gain makes ribbon mics happy and less hiss-y than other pres. Great for DI'ing bass, synths, acoustic and electric guitars. Solid and durable construction. Easily portable and easy to use. Great customer support from the company, Geoff Daking wrote me a personal email in regard to a question I had about piezo pickups. Great product, worth every penny. Wish everything was made this well.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Cassie OHanlon

I wanted a clean and precise preamp for the vocals on my last big project, but I also wanted to add thickness to my vocals. After looking around, I decided to go with a Daking Mic-Pre One. I already had high expectations for this pre, but I was more satisfied than I could imagine. I love its natural clarity, yet it provides me with that bit of extra character and body my voice needs. I've seldom found a preamp that offers this fine balance of transparency and color.

Carson McClain

The transformer on the input of this is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the great sound of the Daking pre. Price should be no issue once you hear this little box. You will be back for the compressor, I guarantee.

Mike Conyers

Essentially a single channel of the renowned Mic Pre IV, the Daking Mic Pre One is a truly awesome transformer preamp! Want to sweeten your vocals? Have your guitar just sit better in the mix? The Mic Pre One is what you need.
