Record Anytime, Anywhere

If you’re a sound designer, podcaster, videographer, or YouTuber, you’re about to get a serious sonic upgrade. The Sound Devices MixPre-10 II eclipses its predecessor with faster, more advanced hardware and 32-bit/192kHz converters. Eight custom-engineered Kashmir mic preamps deliver pro-grade audio. A full-featured mixer and built-in USB-C audio interface are also on tap. A quick glance at the MixPre-10 II's comprehensive metering and sunlight-readable, color LCD touchscreen tell you everything you need to know. You also get internal LTC generation, adjustable analog limiters, an auto-copy function, and a 10-second pre-roll buffer. With the MixPre-10 II, you can record anytime, anywhere — with world-class quality.

Pro-grade sound from top-shelf mic pres and 32-bit converters

You'll be shocked at how great this unassuming little device sounds. Sound Devices outfitted the MixPre-10 II with eight of their great-sounding Kashmir mic preamps. These pres offer a super-low noise floor and adjustable analog limiters to keep your signal clean. 32-bit/192kHz converters ensure that everything is captured with sublime quality. XLR/TRS combo inputs accommodate a wide range of mics and instruments. The MixPre-10 II is a definite upgrade from cheap recorders with off-the-shelf IC-based preamps.

Record to SD card. Stream to USB. Or do both!

You can capture anything with the MixPre-10 II. When you're in the field, it functions standalone, recording audio directly to an SD card. You can also stream multiple channels of audio to your computer via a built-in 12-in/4-out USB-C audio interface. Best of all, you can do both simultaneously! On top of that, an auto-copy to USB drive function ensures that you’ll never lose a recording again. At Sweetwater, we've found that the MixPre-10 II is great for Skype or FaceTime interviews, and recording audio for podcasts or vlogs is a piece of cake.

It's only as difficult as you make it

Even though the MixPre-10 II is packed to the gills with useful features, Sound Devices realizes that not every YouTuber or vlogger is a recording engineer. That's why this portable recorder offers two modes of operation. Basic mode lets you start recording right out of the box. It takes the guesswork out of recording, and is great for recording interviews, vlogs, and podcasts. Advanced mode lets you really dig into the MixPre-10 II's features. It gives you access to metering, routing, timecode, mic pre gain, stereo and mid-side channel linking, headphone presets, and more. You also get a Custom mode, if you’re so inclined.

Tailor-made for videographers

Pairing the MixPre-10 II with your camera is easy, thanks to its retractable 1/4-20 mounting capacity. It can generate internal LTC for perfect audio/video synchronization, and you can also feed time code into the MixPre-10 II from an external time-code generator. This flexible recorder can receive record triggers via HDMI from your camera to start and stop recording via the camera's Record button. And because it can be powered via batteries or AC, taking it out into the field is an easy endeavor.

Amazing Recorder!

Probably the ultimate "prosumer" recorder on the market. Such a satisfying purchase and so much fun to use. No complaints what so ever.

Worth it!

I upgraded from a Tascam DR-70D and WOW there is no comparison! I do a lot of remote recording of acoustic concerts like chamber music and jazz ensembles, so having a small recorder is a must have. I haven't gotten to use it for much yet, but February is booked up for that. I did get a chance to record some drum tracks as well as a voice over to see how it sounds and feels.

The preamps are wonderful. I never had a problem with the Tascam preamps, but compared to these Kashmir pres, the Tascam is noisy and lifeless. In my voice, it gave my midrange a silky quality I have not experienced outside of a dedicated studio. The Tascam isn't bad sounding, but it's like a window made from glass vs plexi.

I didn't have a ton of mics with me, so I recorded a kick drum, stereo overheads, and a room mic in fig 8 with the null facing the kit. On all tracks, the drums had dimension and clarity while still having power and weight. I'm not sure if these preamps have transformers, but I really liked how they sounded with drums. You can use this as a DAW interface, and these preamps sound good enough to make me want to use it as such every time I record drums.

I downloaded the add on plugin Musician which turns this into a 12 track multitrack machine. I've played around with some of it but again, I have not had a chance to run it through it's paces yet. I'm trying to get my buddy out of his new house and into the rehearsal space to jam with me.

I also record my own sound effects when needed (I work in theatre designing plays too), and I've been really getting into recording at 32 bit float, and I have plans later this month to go on a hike and record some nature sounds in 32/96. The MixPre is the only portable device I have that can record 32 bit.

So, this thing is expensive, and hard to justify unless you can take it out and make money with it. One reason I chose this above other models (since I do not do video work) is you can sync 2 together via internal time code and get a portable 32 bit 16 track machine. That is next on my list…

I'm sure there is a lot more magic to talk about, but I haven't found it yet. I say it's worth every penny.

After 15 months of use...

... I can say with confidence that this is my favorite piece of equipment I have ever purchased. Where would I be without my MixPre? I use it almost everyday and travel internationally with it. I use it to record drums, synths, rehearsals, concerts, field recordings, and foley sounds, but I have plans to branch out and record songwriters, interviews, and classical ensembles soon. I also use it any time I use my computer at home, so I connect my Røde NT1 to input 1 and video chat (people often compliment my audio quality).

Maybe the plastic battery sled is a weak point, and if you use mics with phantom power the AA batteries will drain quickly. Don't worry, there's a simple solution: get a rechargeable lithium ion battery with a hi-rose connector and you'll have many hours of constant recording with multiple phantom powered mics! You can mount the MixPre to a mic stand, and mount a camera on top of the MixPre with a hot shoe for location filming and sync the timecodes. Mounting to a mic stand is also great for nature field recordings if you don't want to put the device on the ground, or for full band rehearsals. I mounted an XY bar to the top of the MixPre so I didn't have to bring an additional mic stand to the recording location (this requires an additional adapter, On-Stage makes one).

The on-board limiters are amazing and adjustable. The audio routing is highly flexible and innovative. The headphone amp is awesome with my 250 ohm headphones (no worries powering 600+ ohm headphones). The SD card slot is so convenient. I have not tried the optional plug-ins yet (Musician, NoiseAssist, Ambisonics, MixAssist) but I have plans to buy them someday. At first operating the MixPre can be a bit "menu dive-y" but once you get used to it it's a breeze and it's fun!

This device is well worth the money and I'm glad I invested in it. I sold all my other interfaces and have no need or desire to buy anything else. If you don't anticipate needing 8 inputs, then absolutely go for the MixPre 3 or 6.

Sound Devices MixPre 10 ii

Super piece of gear! It is well built and sounds fabulous. What they don't tell you is how good of a DAW interface it is...USB 3 right into the MacBook Pro with ProTools. The preamps are fine...very high resolution. The internal slate mic can even be used as a talkback to the cue mixes. The MixPre connected with my iPhone via USB and all the inputs and two outputs showed up as MixPre labeled. The unit is worth the money for the preamps alone.

After many years and as always, Delvin is the best! Give him a call!

Excellent features and sound for the price

I have owned or used Zoom, Tascam, Roland, Mixpre I and now the Mixpre II.

Easiest to use was the Roland R88. Best sounding is the Mixpre II.

Only complaint is the touch screen and knobs are very small and hard to navigate quickly for me, thus the half star loss. You also can't use MS decoding on playback - only while actually recording.

Sound Devices has excellent support, and It's my preference to support American companies whenever possible. With the lower price and added features, the II series was a clear winner.
