Workhorse Large-diaphragm Condenser

The Aston Microphones Origin is a unique-looking, high-performance large-diaphragm condenser mic with a 1-inch gold-evaporated capsule. The Origin's cardioid polar pattern, 10dB pad, and 80Hz highpass filter make this mic an all-around studio and stage workhorse. It delivers a lovely, open sound with shimmering harmonics and Sweetwater engineers have found the Origin to be accurate and versatile, excelling in most applications — especially on vocals and acoustic guitars. The build quality is outstanding: Aston has hand-selected the capsule and paired it with high-end transformerless, balanced circuitry employing top-drawer components. The Origin delivers a true and transparent-sounding rendition of the source, capturing treble detail without a trace of harshness. If you're after quality on a budget, Aston Microphones' Origin is highly recommended.

Wave-form mesh head with built-in pop filter

The Origin features Aston's signature wave-form mesh head which not only looks cool, but also provides rugged protection for the mic's internals. If subjected to a forceful ding, the shock-resistant wave-form grille allows the head of the mic to distort, then return to its normal position without damage. It also offers a measure of off-axis rejection, helping to diminish unwanted ambient sound. Built into the wave-form head is a mesh-knit pop filter that eliminates plosives in vocal performances. This single-piece mesh cage is made of stainless steel, so it's rustproof; you can even remove and wash it!

Unique chassis and end cap design

Did we mention how striking this mic looks? To achieve its hard-wearing, eye-catching finish, your Origin's chassis has been tumbled individually for up to four hours, with the engraving applied afterward. A custom-molded end cap with integrated XLR and built-in, interchangeable mic stand thread adapter is another unique aspect of the design. In light of the mic's superior onboard shock absorption, you can mount it directly to a mic stand, which also makes it easy to repair and maintain.

Works perfectly in mid-side recording

I use the Aston in mid-side recording of my new Epiphone inspired by Gibson J-45 and I love the sound. I was introduced to this mic by J.P. Cormier's excellent YouTube review of the Inspired by Gibson line of Epiphone guitars. I was intrigued when all of his reviews have just the Origin in the video and all of his acoustic guitars sound so good through that single mic.

I use mine mid-side - with a Golden Age R1 preamplified ribbon mic and they sound really great together.

Incredible microphone from 'across the pond'

I recently read an interview with U2's the Edge regarding their latest release "Songs of Surrender," a 40 track reimagining of their most popular songs. Much of it was created during lockdown, and are driven mostly by acoustic guitar.

Edge did much of his work in his home studio. When asked how he achieved such a great sound for his acoustic guitar, he explained he used a great mic from a British company called Aston.

When I researched the company and found they were available on Sweetwater, I immediately reached out to my rep Matt Zulegar. I was stunned to discover the price; I couldn't believe it was so inexpensive. But all the reviews I had read were confirmed by Matt; this is a GREAT mic!

He suggested a package that included their integrated shock mount/pop filter. When it arrived, I swapped the mic (very ruggedly constructed, btw), not changing any of my signal path settings.

Do NOT let the small size of this mic fool you. I was blown away by the sound (a clean, hot signal, incredible head room, very low noise floor, etc.).

I had a session booked for that afternoon, and used the Aston to record a couple of acoustic parts driving the song I was working on (way up front in the track and not just texture).

My client messaged back saying how much they love what I did, but asked "what did you do differently" for the acoustics?

Ha! I was 'dead chuffed' (British slang for a British mic) by this. Sold!

I purchased the smaller "Origin" model which is a large diaphragm condenser with a single cardioid pattern, perfect for my needs. If you need multiple polar patterns, check out the "Spirit" model.

Best mic purchase I've made. You will not be disappointed!

Thanks again, Matt, for your help (as always)!

Affordable High Quality Condenser Mic

I'm not a microphone expert or audio engineer. As a hobbyist, my uses are simple: voice overs, capturing sung vocals, capturing acoustic instruments, and Zoom calls. I have the standard SM57/58s and various dynamic mics but wanted a high quality condenser mic without breaking the bank. Came across the Aston Origin at a screaming deal and jumped on it as I'd seen the reviews and comparisons to other much more expensive mics.

You get a lot of bang for the buck with this mic. It sounds stellar, has crispy highs, is built like a tank, and I love the ability to direct mount and the built-in pop filter. It also looks very unique and cool on your audio desk. I couldn't be happier.

Very Impressive Mic

I was in the market for a good vocal mic for my home studio. Obviously there are lots of choices, especially in this price range. After a lot of research, I purchased an Aston Origin mic. I watched the interview Sweetwater did with the founder of the company, and I really liked him and their whole story.

Out of the box, you can feel the quality of this mic. It was both smaller and heavier than the last mic I was using. I like the compact size. One thing I really love about the Origin is that you can screw it directly to a mic stand. Very convenient. Of course, the most important thing is the sound. I just finished my first day in the studio with it. After singing just one line, I audibly said to myself "Wow. This mic is awesome." The sound is crystal clear, pleasant and cuts through the mix. It absolutely exceeds my needs. I have a feeling I am going to be loving this mic for a long time.

One last note. Buying stuff like a microphone online is challenging because you really don't know if you are going to like it until you actually hear it in person. The videos Sweetwater did for this product were much appreciated and played a big factor in my decision. Their customer service is second to none, and is why I buy all my stuff from Sweetwater.
