Would be worth it at twice the price

Even though it was released 10 years ago this is an incredible keyboard for a performing musician. Out of the box it's got great piano and electric piano tones and solid patches for strings, synth etc. Some people don't like the Privia action... I think it's great. And at 25lb it is a breeze to load in and load out.

With 4 zones that can overlap it's easy to build great sounding set-ups for every song in your set. I'll assign three different horns to the upper register for a fat horn sound and then a mellow organ for my left hand. It is a single button press to pull up the next song, with every setting including effects like reverb, chorus, etc dialed-in and ready to go.

If you want to get nerdy they threw in a six oscillator synth with every basic feature including tons of waveforms, various LFO options, good amp and filter modulation and a effects like phaser, flanger, rotary speaker, etc.

But even if you never touch the synth, this is a great value.

The only downside for me is no expression pedal and no aftertouch. But given everything else you get for this ridiculously low price, I can live with it.

If you have the budget for a $5k stage piano, go for it, but I personally could not be happier with this keyboard.

Casio px 55 is a very versital keyboard and sounds great

I am primarily a guitar player but have started in keyboards about 5 years ago, recently purchased this casio and I am amazed with it, the hammer action is very realistic and the piano and electric piano sounds are amazing, especially the grand piano and the fender rhodes electric piano. Also the on board sliders are amazing on how you can shape your sound on the fly without complicated menus etc. Many of the settings can't be appreciated without headphones or in stereo. They are amazing swirls and pans with stereo or headphones that just don't come out when run mono. This keyboard is well made also and holds up well, I have played mine for about 2 years now with no problems.

Great Board!

Honestly, as someone who has had and played numerous boards, you cannot beat this board for the price point with all the capabilities. I would easily put it against the more known and popular brands and I assure you you couldn"t tell a difference.

Surprises everyone, great fun to play

I've had the Casio Privia PX-5S for a few years now. I started back into performing by getting the well-reviewed Casio XP-W1 first, and enjoyed that so much while reading great reviews of the PX-5S that I decided to make a two-tier Casio stack.

I was auditioning for new bands this spring, and there were plenty of side-eyes when two Casios came out of the cases. They had said "professional gear" in their ads, and you know they were envisioning Korgs and Rolands. But then we started playing, and the presumptions turned to awe and legitimate interest in how the Casios were coming out with such great sounds, how they were to play, how much they cost, and so forth. Of course, once they learned they're great fun to play with great feel and expressiveness, as well as lighter and more affordable than their competition, the side-eyes turned to respectful gazes.

Now performing with a new band and putting these though their paces once more, I'm reminded of how stellar they are. I had to learn about 50 new songs this spring (new slice of a genre), with new sounds aplenty, and the PX-5S has more than kept pace. The new bandmates have been amazed at how the electric pianos growl and glisten, how the pianos punctuate or soften songs as appropriate, or how the organ sounds shimmer.

The PX-5S has a great feel, but as other reviewers have noted, it is a little clunky when playing organ, as the key bounce is slower and deeper than an organ, so often I play the XW-P1 for solos. And programming the PX-5S isn't the most intuitive thing ever, but once you get the pattern down, it's not too bad. It's not a perfect keyboard in those regards, but is excellent overall with great sounds. And it's a joy to play.

Brilliant

What can I say about this thing other than if you need a keyboard with fantastic piano sounds and synth capabilities, I don't believe you will find anything better at this price point. The grand piano sounds really are top notch. It really does a great job of recreating the sound of a grand piano, even down to the sound of depressing the damper pedal. The control offered by the sliders and dials really lets you dial in the type of sound you want. I like that these also send midi messages so you can map them to your favorite VST or another keyboard. I've used the sliders to control the lower manual drawbars on my Hammond XK1c. Whenever I sit down to program new stage sets, I usually find out new things this keyboard can do; the customization you can accomplish with this thing is pretty incredible. I really can't recommend this keyboard enough. I've had it for 7 or 8 months now, and really I can't think of any flaws, at least in regards to how I use it. It's lightweight, sturdy, and full of features that will be appreciated by any gigging musician. I use it every week and it doesn't ever let me down.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Matt Fawcett

When I played the Casio PX-5S for the first time, I was very pleased with the realistic piano sounds. I'm used to playing on an upright grand piano and the keys felt right at home. Having so many presets to work with that sound great right off the bat is a real plus. It may be light in weight, but it's definitely heavy on features and very well thought out.

Many of the keyboardists here at Sweetwater have fond memories of Casio that go all the way back to when we first started playing, and that's often kept us coming back for decades. Today, we're happy to point players to Casio keyboards, no matter how long they've been playing - even if they've never played at all. In fact, we've set up many beginners with Casio LK series Lighted-key models, and they've regularly raved about how easy these keyboards make learning. Likewise, several of the solo performers at Sweetwater swear by their fully loaded Privia and other advanced lines, which provide top-notch accompaniment and more. And if you stop by the Sweetwater Piano Showroom, we'll be happy to show you the latest Casio home piano - all providing amazing value and style.
