A Classic Tape Delay Makes Its Triumphant Return!

The Roland RE-201 Space Echo stands tall as one of the most innovative and inspirational delay effects units in music history. Nearly 50 years later, the distinctive echoes and unique character of the RE-201 is revived in the BOSS RE-202 Space Echo digital delay pedal, meticulously crafted to deliver 1:1 performance yet packaged in a pedalboard-friendly enclosure. One look is all it takes to see that the RE-202 is no mere clone — Sweetwater's Space Echo diehards were happy to see all 11 original echo combinations on tap, with an additional 12th coming courtesy of a fourth tape head. Classic controls for bass, treble, repeat rate, and more will feel familiar to experienced users yet easy enough for first-time players to access that special Space Echo charm, with added Saturation and Wow and Flutter knobs to dial in extra color and modulation, respectively. Modern guitarists looking for extra flexibility and functionality in their digital delays have a lot to love in the RE-202, with four onboard presets for instant recall of your favorite sounds, Warp and Twist footswitch controls, and so much more. Channel the sound and feel of a delay effect deity with the BOSS RE-202 Space Echo digital delay pedal!

Vintage Roland Space Echo features and then some

Though designed to package the classic Space Echo sound into a reliable, convenient, and much more affordable pedal, BOSS is aware of the demands today's guitarists have when outfitting their rigs. The RE-202 takes the best of classic digital delay sounds and combines them with contemporary performing and recording features for a vintage-yet-modern feel. Four user presets in the form of "Memories" make it easy to store your delays, with external MIDI expanding this to 127 total presets for even greater functionality. Want to experiment with "new" and "aged" tape modes? The RE-202's Tape button instantly swaps between these two options to find that perfect sound. And whenever you want to mix up your sound with some added warping and twisting, footswitch controls for each function allow for enhanced creativity and complete control over every aspect of your delay.

Like having an RE-201 Space Echo, on your pedalboard.. plus more.

Feels high quality. Looks like a vintage Space Echo, but at your feet. Sounds nostalgic. *Not even one vintage RE201 is going to sound like another RE201, but this sounds like a great tape delay with a lot of controls to shape the sound. Favorite features: New/old tape button (affects the character of the delay), saturation knob, wow & flutter knob, dotted 8th tap subdivision (added with firmware update), press and hold for twist & warp (shoegazey self oscillation), 4 memory slots and a footswitch to cycle through them. Just a killer sounding, workhorse of a delay pedal that has that tape mojo and vintage vibe.

Boss RE-202 Space Echo

I'm a tape echo fanatic and had the previous version of this pedal on my board for 10+ years. The prior version never left me wanting but as soon as this pedal was announced, I had pre-ordered from Sweetwater and got it very quickly after the release. I have had it for a little over a year now and think this is a significant improvement over the RE-20 both due to the sound of the 202 along with the functionality. I have an echo fix ef-x2 which is a real deal tape echo that is heavily inspired by the original Roland RE-201. While the Boss RE-202 doesn't sound exactly like the echo fix, it sounds close enough in any mix, is still highly inspiring, and can do several things the real tape cannot ( stereo, tap tempo, presets, modulation/tape age control, etc). All this extra functionality with no need for maintenance or lugging around a large, expensive and precious tape unit.

At the time of my writing this review, it's a great time to buy as it should ship with the latest firmware update and it's currently $50 less than when I purchased. This is a serious mojo machine that I think everyone should experience at least once

A Worthy Successor

I haven't used a tape delay in years (well, sometimes when working in a studio) as I just got tired of the hassle and upkeep. The sound? Of course! Everyone I know loves that sound and the RE-202 gets as close as you're going to get right now. Does it sound exactly the same? I'm sure some will say they can hear the difference (and may actually be able to in certain instances), but for all intents and purposes, this hits the sonic nail on the head with the audio hammer.

The RE-202 is a bit more fun than my old RE-201 ever was the with the addition of the 4th "tape head." Also included in that assessment are the presets (neat!) and the footswitch to ramp up the self-oscillation.

Purists may scoff, but I don't have time for that sort of thing anymore. It works, it sounds good, and it brings what I need to the table. I highly recommend the RE-202 for those reasons.

Awesome Pedal!!!

I've been playing around with the Boss RE-202 Space Echo Digital Delay Pedal for hours. Had it out on one gig. It's so much fun to play my guitar straight through the Pedal. It's inspirational to use and stimulates creative experimentation with different sounds. On feature I really like is I can have 4 different presets. I love slap-back sounds so I can have different degrees of these programed in. But you can get really crazy sounds if that your thing. There are so many options for it that your imagination will run wild! You just have to set it the way you want it. From playing at home to taking it out for gigging or studio use I highly recommend the Boss RE-202 Space Echo Digital Delay Pedal! Delay and reverb all at you foot makes for a fun and great sounding usable pedal.

Great upgrade to the amazing RE-20 pedal it replaces

First, disregard the one-star review that states there is no "delay time control". That's called "Repeat Rate" on this pedal. (That review should probably be deleted, as it's factually incorrect and negatively affecting the overall rating.)

I've used the RE-20 pedal since it came out. It's one of two (Small Clone being the other) that's remained in my guitar setup since purchase, and it's been used on every instrument imaginable, plus vocals. I ended up getting a second one so I didn't have to keep taking it off my board to use with a synth or vocals.

When the RE-202 was announced, I preordered it immediately here without hesitation. It came a lot sooner than I expected.

What a fantastic upgrade. The extra tape head, the tape age options, the presets, the saturation, the wow & flutter, and the extra reverb options are the big changes from the RE-20, plus a dedicated footswitch to enable/disable the reverb. Oh, and the Warp function is a nice alternative to the Twist function if you want to take things to a weird place quickly.

If you own and/or love the RE-20, you'll love this and should get it immediately. You'll then have two incredible Space Echo pedals: one you know and love, and a brand new one with some killer features to expand on what you already love.

If you don't own a Space Echo pedal of any kind -- well, it's a great time to be alive, because this is the best one yet.
