Octapad SPD 30

Nice - EZ setup (about ten minutes) and lots of drums. I have not used the layering or phrase background yet (don't really have that need). However, I have listened to recordings of my jam sessions and am sometimes hard pressed to tell whether I am using my TD17 or the Octapad plus extras as shown in pix. Of course, smaller targets mean more coordination.....See attached pix in which I expand the kit to include two Roland pads as snare and floor tom, hihat (PDX8) and bass pedal - all pulled off my TD17 (which is also a great kit)

Special thanks to Carson McClain for helping with both the TD17 and the Octapad SPD30 as well as a bunch of other stuff...attached pix is a ten plus minute setup and play.

A great alternative to humping around acoustic congas

My percussionist has a lovely Latin Percussion conga set with a matching LP bongo pair mounted on the same stand, along with cowbells, and who knows what all -- she's a percussionist, right, and any thing you can hit with your hands or a stick is fair game -- but there are times when we don't have the room for all her acoustic instruments at a gig.

The answer is the Roland Octapad: many drum kits (she mostly uses the Cuban, which includes timbales, something missing from her kit).

I have a fair amount of experience with drum machines, starting with a mid-80s Yamaha R-something that had 8-bit samples (!) through a more modern Alesis SR-16 and I have done a fair amount of recording drum kits, so I know what the real thing is like.

I plug it into a Genz-Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T combo amp, which has proven to be a good choice: some of the samples in the Octapad go 'way down in the frequency spectrum.

The thing that blew me away was the fact that the pads are touch-sensitive. Varying your hand or stick attack changes the sound, just like the real thing, and sometimes in organic, surprising ways.

The only issue is that she's not used to hearing the sound coming out of the speaker instead of off the heads, but all of bass/guitar players know about that.

The kit selections are varied, and there are probably a lot of the kits that will never be selected, but too many is better than not enough, right?

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Shawn Fitzgerald

I originally bought an Octapad because I wanted to add special sounds to my acoustic kit live. Roland's factory sounds make it particularly attractive, and while the pads are super playable, I love that I can use triggers connected to my kick and snare to play sounds. It's exactly what I wanted and more! What surprised me the most about the Octapad is that it's also a perfect practice tool. One of the ways I use it is to record troublesome rhythms, slow them down, isolate parts, and work my way up to tempo.

Nick Graham

The Roland SPD-30 is a great for when I want to record rhythms without using either an acoustic drum set or a full-size electronic kit. By allowing me to play with sticks, the SPD-30 lets me put a real human element into my mostly electronically created music. It's a great way to break out of that tempo-locked feel!

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
