ADAM Audio's Sub8 Subwoofer

Designed for smaller control rooms up to 20 square meters, the ADAM Audio Sub8 is a compact yet powerful subwoofer that extends the low-frequency range of any nearfield monitoring system down to 28Hz. The Sub8 houses a robust 8.5" woofer with a 1.5" voice coil driven by a 160W ICE Power amplifier which combines low heat generation with high performance to handle maximum power levels during marathon sessions. The front baffle is fitted with two motorized knobs that let you tweak the input level and crossover frequency settings — which can also be controlled via the included wireless remote — to optimize your monitor setup from your preferred listening position. The Sub8 pairs perfectly with ADAM Audio's AX Series nearfield monitors.

ADAM Audio: elevating the state of the art

From its 1999 launch in Berlin, ADAM Audio has built a solid reputation among the pro audio cognoscente. Sweetwater knows that a superior speaker system has superior components, and this is one area where the company has a distinct edge. With years of R&D behind each proprietary driver, ADAM Audio's custom driver technology expresses itself in breakthroughs such as their X-ART (eXtended Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeter, which is based on a groundbreaking 1960s invention, the Heil Air Motion Transformer — and in fact, was the main impetus for the formation of ADAM Audio. The X-ART tweeter became the key to ADAM's signature transparent, high-definition sound; and the core development of ADAM’s proprietary designs going forward.

Embracing, exploiting, and working with modern materials has allowed ADAM Audio to formulate loudspeaker components that continually elevate the state of the art in studio monitor design. Materials such as rare-earth magnets and high-strength diaphragm foils have increased reliability, enhanced performance, and made possible new driver geometry. As compared with conventional driver technology, Adam drivers deliver optimized radiation characteristics, lower distortion, and higher efficiency. Along with installations in a growing number of top studios, ADAM Audio's monitor range has garnered rave reviews from audio experts and recording engineers worldwide. If you're considering an upgrade to world-class monitoring, you'll be in good company with ADAM Audio monitors.

Adam Audio Sub 8 is more than enough

Paired this with Adam Audio A7X's and all I can say is wow. I have a very small home studio and went back in forth in my mind as whether I needed a larger sub or not. I can tell you without a doubt I made the right choice due to this really gives me plenty of smooth low end.

It just works, fantastic piece of kit

I picked one of these up with a pair of A5X's about 4 years ago and I don't think I can go back to mixing without a sub ever again. Being able to actually HEAR that bottom end is invaluable to me even though I don't work in super bass driven music (mostly classical and jazz) and the sub itself is just fantastic. I'm only looking at subwoofers on Sweetwater again because I'm going to be moving studios soon and I'm upsizing my rig to 5.1 to do some more work in post and am thinking about getting a bigger sub. What I do know is I'm gonna be sticking with Adams!

Pricey, but worth it

This a great sub, matched with my A7X's. So much more clarity in the low end of my mixes now. Bass drums sound like real drums again, not just muffled thuds, or mechanical clicks. Same with the bass guitar, it has much more presence. If anyone tells you that you don't need to have a sub when mixing, I think they are mistaken. Or they are using very large midfield monitors. If you are using small to midrange size monitors, you need that extra low frequency range a subwoofer will give you. 30-50 Hz is where all the magic happens, and most desk sized monitors don't go that low. So glad I bought this sub and added it to my setup. The crossover is super clean, my system has never sounded so good. My A7X's sound better too, because they are not struggling to reproduce that low end. And very much appreciate the tip from Sweetwater to get the 8.5 inch instead of the 7. I don't have to push this as hard as I would the 7 inch. So I feel like I have full sonic coverage with lots of headroom.

Clean, deep, well-integrated with my small active monitors.

I bought this sub as part of a bundle with Adam A5x monitors. It gives me all the bass I need, without smudging or exaggeration.

I'm not an audio engineer--I'm a listener to, not a producer of, recordings. But I value good sound.

The lowest frequency I need is about 30Hz. The recurring C the Bach Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582) is about 32 Hz, as is the low C in that famous opening of Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (a rather dull piece after that spectacular beginning, but never mind).

When I put on the Bach as a test record, I found that I could get the same effect in my 18'X12' listneing room (with 9 1/2 foot ceiling) that I would experience in a church, listening to a live performance: I could feel the walls, the floor, and my own body vibrating to that low C. (I wouldn't do this too often--I live in a condo, and the neighbors must be considered. But it is a viscerally thrilling experience all the same.)

It took a while to coordinate the crossover frequency and the volume of the sub with the monitors, but once I got it right, I could tweak it fairly easily to adjust to bass-shy or bass-heavy source material, and to match the volume to that of the monitors.

Overall, the combination of the monitors and this sub gives me better sound than I had from the much larger speakers I used to have.
Music background: I'm a good acoustic guitarist (traditional folk and blues), and an avid listener to a wide range of classical music.
