A Wild Beast of a Preamp!

Tweaking the Warm Audio TB12 Tone Beast Preamp is addictive — at Sweetwater, we can't get enough of it! Based on the API 312 preamp's design and sporting premium Cinemag transformers, the Tone Beast is already a stellar mic pre. The Tone Beast's real magic, however, lies in its multiple discrete signal paths. With the flip of a switch, you can select different transformers, op-amps, and capacitors, and enjoy a myriad of tones in the process. Push the Tone Beast and enjoy the harmonic distortion it lends to electric guitars, bass, or anything else that needs some grit. Big, bold, and fully-professional, you won't find many preamps like the Warm Audio TB12 Tone Beast for under a grand!

Multiple discrete signal paths provide unprecedented flexibility

Experienced recording engineers love how different mic pres color their sound. They know that by combining different mics with different preamps, they can make every source sound its absolute best. With the TB12 Tone Beast in your rack, you'll be able to do the same, thanks to its unprecedented versatility. The Tone Beast's flexibility is absolutely staggering. First of all, you have your choice of a Melcor 1731 or Jensen 918 op-amp. The 1731 is very colored and breaks up quickly, while the 918 is fairly clean with just a hint of character. Secondly, you have your choice of a 100% steel or 50% nickel transformer. The steel output transformer is more colored than the nickel transformer, especially when pushed. You can also bypass the transformers completely for an ultra-clean tone. Finally, you have your choice of tantalum and electrolytic capacitors for even more tonal variety.

Coloration — and why you want it

The most coveted vintage consoles and outboard gear weren't transparent. And that's the point behind the Warm Audio Tone Beast. Coloration is, in many cases, desirable. If your mixes sound unprofessional, lacking in vibrancy and depth, you'll love the Tone Beast. Subjective listening tests played a big part in the development of this amazing preamp. Test equipment can tell you only so much, and there's a point in the design process where you just have to let your ears call the shots. You wouldn't mix with earplugs and an oscilloscope, would you?

Top-tier performance — and amazing value

At Sweetwater, we understand that outfitting your studio is a balancing act between performance and value. Warm Audio gets that, too, and their Tone Beast delivers on both counts. In spite of its ultra-reasonable pricing, Warm Audio gear is made in the USA and uses only the finest components such as genuine Cinemag input and output transformers. Look at it this way: at this price, you can pack your rack with two or more Tone Beast preamps — perfect for recording live drums or more than one track at a time.

The Name Doesn't Lie

The TB12 is AMAZING!!! I've been using it on guitar and vocals, and it's a main part of my front end when recording.

It truly is a beast!

I really have mixed mostly in the box the past few years and recently picked up a few Warm Audio items.I would say the tone difference as far as warmth and harmonics in this thing are drastic even at minimal settings. The first thing I tried was my guitar and It has never sounded nearly as rich and warm as it did through the tonebeast!
I love it on bass guitar and vocals as well.
Even with the low output SM7 b mic it just has more than enough gain to get the job done and still overdrive the output to get that warm saturated sound. So far I have the TB-12 two of the EQ's and a WA-76 compressor and I am totally sold on Warm Audio. It all looks really cool in the new Argosy console my son bought for me. :)

Beauty and the beast all in one.

The Tone Beast Black, is based on the classic API 312 preamp, yet it offers a variety of tone-shaping options at a price that is almost hard to believe. especially considering it houses 3 high-quality Cinemag transformers and a fully discrete Class-A signal path. If you are in the market for a great sounding, versatile yet affordable preamp you should consider the Tone Beast Black, The magic happens when you drive the circuits to distortion. The way they break up is what makes this a great addition to my studio. It really gives you a lot of colors to paint with.

ToneBeast TB12

I cannot say enough about the Warm Audio TB12 mic pre. It IS a BEAST. All kinds of tone options--dirty, clean and in-between. I have several Warm Audio products (a pair of EQP Tube EQ's and WA-76 compressor--will be adding more in the future). I have been very pleased with Warm Audio's sound and quality.

I would also like to compliment Sweetwater on their customer service. I recently had a problem with a bad channel on my interface, so I sent an audio recording of the problem to Gordon in Sweetwater support. I assumed that I would have to send the unit in for repair. No sir. He shipped out a replacement unit that same day. Overnight.
I was not expecting that. I know that Sweetwater has a good reputation when it comes to customer service. Now I have seen it first hand.

Workhorse preamp

I love my TB12 Tone Beast! It's my go-to preamp for everything. The customizable vintage and modern op amps along with the various controls really allow you to dial in a plethora of sounds. I can get everything from a clean-but-weighty analog tone to totally saturated and distorted from the Tone Beast. It really lives up to its name!

Oh, and I greatly appreciate the insert send and return for dynamics processing and/or EQ!
