A Smart Sub for Your Dynaudio Monitor System

Are you tired of trying to gauge the bottom end of your recordings? Dynaudio's 18S is a serious, pro-grade subwoofer that gets you tightly down to 16Hz. You'll feel the crush of a well-recorded kick drum. The full weight of a 5-string bass. You'll also be able to identify any low-frequency mud that needs to be cleaned up. To properly record frequencies this low, you've got to be able to hear them. Adding the 18S to your monitoring setup opens up a new world of performance that lets you record, mix, and master with meticulous accuracy — and deliver tracks that translate perfectly to the world beyond your studio. Employing dual-opposing 9.5" long-throw MSP+ Hybrid Drive units and 500 watts of Class D amplification, the 18S features intelligent DSP that seamlessly tailors its performance to popular Dynaudio high-end monitors, for true full-range monitoring that will help you make better recordings.

Advanced DSP automatically mates with popular Dynaudio monitors

The 18S is engineered with Dynaudio's advanced DSP modeling technology that acoustically mates the 18S to any of the company's pro studio monitors from the BM and LYD series and above, essentially turning a two-way speaker into a three-way system. And if you combine the 18S with an LYD 48 stereo or surround setup, you’ll have a four-way monitoring system. Tight integration of your full-range speakers with your sub is key for critical accuracy during the recording, mixing, and mastering process. For Dynaudio, this involved assessing the acoustical characteristics of each of their popular high-end studio monitors and creating customized performance maps for each one. You select the specific Dynaudio speakers you are using from the 18S display's menu, and the appropriate roll off will be applied automatically. The process is also future-proof: when Dynaudio adds new monitors to their range, 18S firmware updates that include the new speakers' performance maps will be made available — so your monitoring system can grow according to your needs.

Flexible time- and phase-aligned integration into any studio setup

The 18S is fitted with a selection of RCA and XLR connections for flexible integration into your studio setup and includes a number of handy features to assist with integration into more advanced systems. This includes your ability to set a time delay to ensure the subwoofer and main speakers are working in perfect synchronicity. Simply enter the distance from the sub to the speakers, and the 18S automatically adjusts itself using time and phase delays. Also onboard is a three-way parametric equalizer to defeat room modes that could adversely affect the accuracy of your recordings.

Dual-opposing driver design for power and punch

In the 18S, two new drivers reside at either end of the cabinet, which is wider than it is deep for placement convenience. Delivering a powerful one-two punch is a pair of Dynaudio's cutting-edge MSP+ Hybrid Drive units in a dual-opposing configuration, powered by a 500-watt Class D amplifier.

Hear every nuance and produce mixes that translate

For for the 18S, Dynaudio designed a brand-new driver they call the MSP+ Hybrid Drive. It's made from aluminum rather than the company's usual magnesium silicate polymer. It's effectively a sandwich, with paper backing and an MSP dust-cap on the front. In recent years, the efficacy of sandwich construction has proven its worth for subwoofers, which typically require a more critical balance between stiffness, lightness, and damping than standard speaker drivers. Aside from the technology under the hood, Sweetwater can confirm that the 18S's performance is exemplary. It's a sub that integrates seamlessly with your Dynaudio monitors and lets you work with unfettered creative freedom, confident that you're hearing every nuance — and that your mixes will translate to any playback system.

Clean, Tight, High Quality, Authoritative Bass

This subwoofer is a serious game-changer for bedroom studios. We're talking clean, tight, and in-your-face bass. But heads up, you'll need some decent acoustic treatment to really make this beast sing.

The 18s dives deep into the low end, hitting those sub 20hz notes with a precision that's just nuts. It's flat, like really flat, which is awesome for mixing. I've got it paired with my LYD48s, and together they create this insane soundstage. The bass presence is shocking in the best way – it's like discovering a whole new layer in your tracks.

I've got a pretty sweet home theater setup at home, but next to the 18s, it's like comparing a muddy puddle to a crystal-clear lake. The 18s doesn't just shake the room; it fills it with this pure, detailed bass that you can both hear and feel. It's got enough oomph for any bass head, trust me.

Speaking of which, I'm seriously considering getting another 18s, even though it might mean I end up living in my studio – my wife's not too thrilled about that idea.

The tech side of this thing is just as cool. It's got built-in time alignment and automatically sets crossover points if you're using it with other Dynaudio speakers. And don't let its size fool you – it cranks out every one of its 500 watts with a clarity and precision that's hard to find elsewhere.

So yeah, if you're mixing, producing, or just love to feel the bass, the Dynaudio 18s is a no-brainer. It's a beast in a compact package, giving you that chest-thumping bass without compromising on clarity. Perfect for taking your studio sound to the next level.

Killer Match For Barefoot 01

Out of the box, before I even start tweaking the crossover point and eq, this is an amazing match for my Barefoot 01 monitors. The punch and clarity of this sub is exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks as always to my SW rep, Greg Savino. Superior product and the usual superior service from Greg and Sweetwater.

Only Subwoofer I trust

I wanted to keep up with the "high-end" studios having not only low hitting subwoofers, but a stereo pair. I picked up one of these a little while ago and eventually got a second. The bass is extremely low, accurate, and clarity is unreal. I was finally able to experience that all-enveloping SPL you usually get with headphones, and it hits deep. I have a heavily treated room and the subs are positioned in the best location sonically . Measurement software shows them hitting 20hz at -1.5db. When I'm in "pro" studios working on very high end monitoring setups costing tens of thousands, they still have trouble sparing with my own setup. The time align feature is a godsend and is why I choose this sub over all the others. The phantom center, now that I can dial in the sub and monitors distance, is extremely tight and phase cohesive. Honestly can't mix without them anymore.

If you want to shake the house off the foundation this isn't the sub for that. If you need extremely tight and controlled bass that hits the lowest limits of human hearing, then this should be top of the list.

P.S. If it helps anyone, set the subwoofers crossover as high as it goes, in this case 120HZ. Monitors on stands usually have a frequency dip around 80hz-100hz. Setting the crossover high fills the gap in. Carl Tatz has plenty of videos on this topic.

Impressive Sub With Small Footprint For Mastering

The Dynaudio 18S has proved to be an incredibly accurate addition for near-field and mid-field applications for me in the mastering studio. Even using it in conjunction with other manufacturers hi-end monitors has proven to be an excellent choice. My hi-end monitors already cover down to 34Hz, but with the addition of the 18S and its built-in selectable adjustment for input level and crossover point to your monitors helps to fine tune what frequency's will now go to the monitors. You can even set the distance from the left & right monitors (individually), and well as the 18S to your listening position in centimeters, for time align purposes. Once you get it set up in your studio, it makes a stark difference in the final product. An Excellent product!

Amazing Subwoofer depth & feel for MUSIC, not for Videos

I just purchased my second one of this same subwoofer. Unlike most subwoofers, even expensive ones in this price range, it goes down LINEARLY (+ or - 3 dB) to 16Hz. Although you cannot hear this (I can't), you FEEL it. This is not a particularly loud subwoofer for its power rating, but it is VERY accurate and goes DEEP. I would NOT recommend this subwoofer for a TV sound system though. My other Dynaudio sub is used in my entertainment center. It works beautifully with music, but it is definitely underwhelming for American blockbuster movie subwoofer soundtracks. In fact, my $900 JBL sub blows this Dynaudio away for watching movies. The Dynaudio is accurate, but lacks the exaggerated punch of a cheaper sub designed primarily for movies.

I am a big Dynaudio fan, BTW. Their speakers are simply amazing if you are a perfectionist and an audiophile. They are NOT the best sounding for the average listener, though, as they lack "color" and "punch" that some people love.
