The AKG P170 is a small diaphragm condenser mic that can handle high SPL applications really well, a trait that helped it maintain a good number of positive ratings and user recommendations. While it won’t work well for vocals, its lightweight .5″ transducer diaphragm allows it to handle loud sound sources like drums, percussions, acoustic guitars, wind instruments and more. It even comes with a switchable attenuation pad for even louder applications, so you can position it closer to sound sources with up to 155dB SPL.
While it may not be an all-in-one solution, the AKG P170 is a great complementary microphone that works really well for its intended purpose. Adding it to your studio or stage will result in improved sound, and this is attested to by majority of its users. There were some concern about the mic’s lack of background noise rejection, but it may just be a case of not properly positioning the mic to take advantage of its cardioid polar pattern. Note that the AKGP170 is currently listed as discontinued on the AKG website, but retailers are still selling them, this means that it may soon be out of stock. If you currently have a large diaphragm mic and are planning to expand your tools, the AKG P170 is highly recommended.
