Warm Audio WA12 Mic Preamp (Discontinued)
Warm Audio WA12 Single-Channel Mic Preamp
NB: This has been discontinued and we now recommend these mic preamps instead.
While other preamps aim to be as transparent as possible, the Warm Audio WA12 takes the opposite route. It is meant to color your sound with its 1731-style high voltage amplifier and dual transformer design. It has up to 71dB of gain for powering any type of microphone, including ribbon mics of which this preamp is commonly used with. Other features include tone button that lets you switch input impedance, 20dB pad, phantom power and it has a true hi-Z input for use with electric guitars and basses.

The name of the company itself, "warm audio" is a good summary of what reviewers feel about this preamp. Many were impressed with how it warms up vocal recordings, while others were also happy with its high headroom and ease of use. In addition to vocals, many have also used it successfully with drums, wind instruments, acoustic instruments and many more.
There weren't any notable complaints about the unit, other than a few who simply did not prefer the coloration that it adds.
