Gearank Recommendation
It first appeared on our recommended list for Acoustic Preamp Pedals in March 2020 where it remained until April 2022 when there were more highly rated options for us to recommend.
Overview
The ToneDexter is a digital preamp for acoustic guitars with microphone modelling in an interesting feature called WaveMap which captures and applies the character of a mic to your tone.
By blending its WaveMap signal with that of your piezo pickups, it produces a more natural sound akin to a studio miked acoustic.
ToneDexter works well with all types of soundboard and under-saddle transducers – not just piezos.
It also lets you create your own WaveMaps by simply recording a couple of minutes of play, and it allows you to store up to 22 of these WaveMaps for use whenever you want to.
While it is primarily meant for acoustic guitar, its tone shaping elements allow it to work with other acoustic-electric instruments, including the mandolin, ukulele, violin, banjo, upright bass and more.
Other features include EQ, notch filter, reamping, tuner and boost.
The ToneDexter is ideal for acoustic musicians and multi-instrumentalists who want a versatile preamp capable of a wide variety of tones thanks to its WaveMap mic emulations. But be careful because you can use up a lot of time setting up and tweaking WaveMaps.
This is a great tool for connecting straight to a PA mixing consoles
