Meta Analysis Overview

Our rating of 98/100 is based on analysis of 125+ sources comprised of online reviews and discussions. Under the Pros and Cons headings below you'll find a condensed analysis of what those owners and users have been saying. Feel free to ask questions or add your thoughts in the comments section.

The Martin DRS1 was the highest rated acoustic-electric guitar in the $500 to $1000 price range in November 2016 - this won't come as a surprise to anyone other than some of the hard-core Epiphone devotees. Based on its high Gearank Score, it would almost certainly still enjoy that status today if it wasn't for the fact that we removed that category from our guide to The Best Acoustic Guitars in January 2018.

The stand-out feature of this Dreadnought guitar is that it has an all Solid Sapele top and body.

  • Body Shape: Dreadnought
  • Top: Solid Sapele
  • Body: Solid Sapele back & sides
  • Finish: Satin - Natural
  • Bridge: Black Richlite
  • Neck: Select Hardwood
  • Neck Profile: Martin Performing Artist
  • Fingerboard: Black Richlite
  • Fingerboard Radius: 16"
  • Number of Frets: 20
  • Scale Length: 25.4"
  • Nut Width: 1.6875"
  • Electronics: Fishman Sonitone

The quality of the tone including being both warm and bright came in for praise in quite a large number of customer reviews. Both its unplugged and plugged in tone are very well regarded with many talking about how good they felt the Fishman Sonitone electronics are.

The editor of Acoustic Guitar said, "It has a top-quality build and a fine sound to match. While the guitar does include a few laminate and composite elements—a Stratabond neck and Richlite fingerboard and bridge—it has a traditionally handsome appearance. Add to that the plug-and-play Fishman electronics and you’ve got an unbeatable value."

There were no consistently reported negatives in customer or expert reviews.

If you want that Martin sound in an acoustic-electric but have to keep the price under $1000 then this is your best option.
